I recently retired from the army after 41 years’ service I was employed on a long service job in 53 (Wales and Western) Signal Squadron (Volunteers) in Cardiff, South Wales. I was responsible for the supervision and control of the Squadron Equipment Table, Miscellaneous Stores Account, Expense Account and POL Account. I also have the responsibility for the implementation of the Equipment Care of the Squadron vehicles, trailers, generators and other stores equipment. Other responsibilities within the Squadron was producing Movement Plans, issuing stores, vehicles and communications equipment both in advance and during exercise. All Health and Safety issues with COSHH, HAZMAT and Radioactive items. Over the past 2 years I have planned and organized many Regimental and Squadron training weekends which have been military and adventure training. In my spare time I do charity work from doing sponsored abseils for the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Charity at the Cadburys Factory, a zip lines in Reading Football Club for Help The Heroes and bungee jumping in the National Diving Activity Center in Chepstow for cancer research to name a few. I am at present training hard for my next charity event in June 2010 which is the John O’Goats to Land’s End bike ride.
2002 – 2005
I was employed at the University of Wales Officer Training Corps in Cardiff, Wales. I was the Permanent Staff Instructor of Bangor University in North Wales and I was also the Regimental Adventure Training Officer for the Unit. I was responsible for the initial training of Officer Cadets who then went onto completed officer training at the Royal Military Academy. The training is designed to qualify non-infantry and infantry officers, including overseas students. The potential officers are trained in minor tactics and to the required officer’s standards. The aim of the training is to give the potential officers an insight into becoming officers, prior to joining army units on operations worldwide. My team included myself and 1 Territorial Army Officer and a small administrative staff who instruct on the potential officers 3-year commitment. I was also responsible for major project planning and this included the designing and execution of the overseas Adventure Training Exercise that was conducted in Kenya and Lake Garda. Additional duties involved Budget management, allocation and control of physical and human resources, management and officer’s appraisal, formal forward planning and implementing policy, including Health and Safety legislation. Course design and application of training regimes, student evaluation and reporting.
1999 – 2001
Employed within a School of Apprentices as a Company Sergeant Major, (CSM). As CSM I was responsible primarily for the discipline within the unit, (700 soldiers). Additional tasks that I was responsible for were, organizing duty rosters, trials by Courts Martial, unit security and public order training, conducting anti terrorist search operations, a Compulsory Drug Testing Officer, (CDTO) fire training and the organization of military parades; some of which received Royal visits. During my tour as CSM I organized and led expeditions worldwide. During this time I was additionally employed as the Unit Welfare Warrant Officer where my duties involved welfare support to 150 dependant family members of serving soldiers. The role involved child guidance, housing allocation, marriage guidance, child protection and bereavement counselling, the organizing of family sports days and social functions. Much of my time was spent liaising with other welfare agencies that were in support of service families.
1993 – 1999
During this period I was employed as the Company Quarter Master Sergeant, (CQMS) where I was responsible for the logistical support of a Company of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) unit, the demand and control of stores and equipment valued up to several millions of pounds. I was responsible for the logistical support of a REME Unit on operations in Poland. During this period I served in several countries including Germany, Canada, USA, Belize, Brunei, Norway and Hong Kong. As the Company Quarter Master Sergeant on exercise in Poland I was responsible for the demand, issue and control of stores and equipment in support of a Battle Group. Prior to this position I was the Company Regimental Specialist Sergeant (CRS) where I was responsible for the discipline, training and administration of soldiers awaiting Trade Training, at one stage I had over 1000 soldiers to look after with very little staff. During this period I turned a disused building into a first class rugby club and social bar with very little resources and help and was put forward for an MBE which I was unsuccessful. I also planned and led many overseas exercises to many parts of the world, which includes USA, France and Kenya this was to keep soldiers occupied while awaiting Trade Training. I organized and implementing a big clean up of Hells Gate National Park for the Kenya authorities.
1982 – 1993
Following my enlisting into the Royal Regiment of Wales in December 1982 I have undertaken a wide range of military duties. Rising steadily through the ranks from a Private soldier to a Corporal and transferred to the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers in September 1993, my duties included regimental duties working within an infantry company as a Junior Non Commissioned Officer and also instructional positions for potential officers where I taught minor tactics and weapons. Additionally to all my different positions throughout my time in HM Forces I have raised thousands of pounds for charities all over the country, from running the New York Marathon, walking The Inker Trail, abseiling, zip line, bungee jumping, land rover pulling, 10 mile sponsored juggling run (with my 2 Sons), over 30 ½ marathons and collecting on the streets to support people that are not a fortunate as myself.
