    Description

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Woodwind teacher for the music department at Bishop Wordsworth's Grammar School. The outgoing teacher has built a strong pupil base and currently teaches flute, clarinet and saxophone. Within the woodwind department we also have an oboe and a bassoon teacher. They will join a large and thriving department, working within a dynamic team.

The successful candidate will teach approximately 20-25 individual lessons per week, with the potential of adding beginners from Year 7 in September after the 'music circus'. This is an afternoon where all 165 Year 7s are given demonstrations from our peripatetic team to encourage take up of orchestral instruments. There may also be opportunities for the successful candidates to be involved with ensembles within the department.

The teacher of Woodwind will report to the Director of Music and, in addition to their instrumental teaching, will:

  • Set high standards to all pupils
  • Liaise with parents as necessary, writing reports as required
  • Prepare pupils for playing in concerts and examinations
  • This is a self-employed position so the successful candidate will set their own rate of pay and liaise with the parents and pupils directly. There is administrative support from the department, and we use PracticePal to set all timetables and disseminate within the school community. Person Specification

    Essential:

  • A good degree in Music from a well-respected university or conservatoire
  • Proven ability as a performer, ideally as both a chamber musician and orchestral player
  • Proven ability as an inspiring teacher to pupils, both beginners and up to and including Diploma level
  • Excellent communication, organisation and listening skills
  • Competent IT skills
  • Able to establish a good rapport with parents, pupils and staff alikeThe following would be advantageous:
  • Prior experience of working in a school environment. Bishop Wordsworth's School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. All successful applicants will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and social media checks. Expressions of interest to be sent to Mr Lewis Edney (Director of Music)
