The Role

Newcastle University is a world-class research-intensive university that aims to provide an outstanding educational experience to its students.

You will contribute to all aspects of academic life within Newcastle University's School of Medicine and the broader Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Your primary role will be to deliver undergraduate anatomy education to years 1 and 2 of the MBBS programme, alongside academic work in medical education.

Depending on the grade that you are appointed to you will take on leadership roles as appropriate, including mentoring of other colleagues, curriculum development and engagement activities.

The School of Medicine is focussed on the development and delivery of undergraduate and post-graduate taught programmes in Medicine.

You would be joining an award-winning anatomy team who deliver human anatomy teaching to several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including medicine, dentistry, biomedical science, and sports and exercise science.

Delivery methods include full-cohort lectures, small and large seminars, asynchronous resources, and anatomy laboratory practical's which use human cadaveric prosections.


The successful appointee will also affiliate to one of the Faculty's research themes and to the F aculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School, which delivers postgraduate research degrees.

Key Accountabilities

  • To deliver teaching for MBBS and other undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the Faculty of Medical Science, particularly in gross anatomy practical sessions using cadaveric material

Responsible to the Head of Anatomy, you will:

  • Make a significant contribution to the School's and Faculty's, delivery of undergraduate anatomy and other teaching, learning and assessment
  • Deliver programmes of anatomy and other teaching in the MBBS programme and in other degree courses offered by the Faculty of Medical Science (e.g. Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Physiology, Sport and Exercise Science). This may include giving lectures and leading/teaching demonstrations in the Anatomy practical classes
  • Coordinate components of widening participation and outreach activities in the School
  • Contribute to the marking of examinations and assignments within the programmes taught by the School
  • Undertake other duties as seen necessary by the Head of School, which could include prosection, student admissions, recruitment, appraisal and mentoring
  • Contribute to anatomy teaching on postgraduate courses organised by Continuing Professional Development Course Organisers/NHS consultants
  • Engage in medical education research in their area of expertise

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of teaching to MBBS or other undergraduate students
  • Experience of teaching in a further or Higher Educational Institution or teaching hospital
  • Experience of offering effective student support and guidance
  • Experience of teaching or training health professionals
  • An active interest in current developments in the medical education development arena
  • Interest in developing knowledge and skills in anatomy teaching
  • Interest in the development of pedagogy and improving quality in this area
