As part of this investment we are looking to recruit a
Payroll Clerk, on a permanent full-time basis, based in Birmingham.

You will carry out data entry, control activities and monitoring of payroll information to ensure the accurate and timely processing of Payroll for West Midlands Trains employees


What does the job involve?

  • Carry out daily input of timesheet and expenses data as directed;
  • Maintain sickness records, ensuring appropriate certificates are received and payments are correct in line with occupational sick pay limits;
  • Process SSP documentation and calculations;
  • Carry out manual calculation of Higher Grade Duty payments;
  • Input tax code details received from the Inland Revenue;
  • Maintain basic staff details such as address, bank details, deductions, etc.;
  • Prepare ad hoc BACS payment documentation for adjustments and underpayments;
  • Assist with internal control checks as requested by the Payroll Supervisor;
  • Deal with basic queries by telephone and mail from third parties such as Department of Social Security, Inland Revenue, mortgage lenders, etc.;
  • Compile payroll information for accident and injury claims as required;
  • Carry out general administration work within the payroll function as required; and
  • Any other duties or projects commensurate with the post as required.

What skills and experience do I need to do the job?

  • Selfmotivated and well organised, with an attention to detail;
  • Working knowledge of using MS Office software such as Excel, Word, Sharepoint, Teams;
  • Some knowledge of payroll processing, tax and national insurance procedures is desirable;
  • Experience of Oracle software would be an advantage; and
  • Good communication skills & ability to deal with individuals at all levels.
