    We're looking for a motivated and enthusiastic clinical scientist to join our friendly and expanding medical physics team as MRI physics lead primarily based at Poole Hospital.

    You'll support the delivery of our MRI equipment quality assurance, optimisation and safety programme - assisting our sites in meeting their statutory and professional best practice obligations. Using your extensive experience of MRI physics in a healthcare setting, your leadership will enable you to implement research and innovation in this role.

    Poole is situated on the south coast, with the beautiful Dorset coastline and countryside on its doorstep. Relocation expenses may be available for this role as well as assistance with accommodation costs for up to 3 months.

    Main duties of the job

    The successful applicant will support the delivery of our MRI equipment quality assurance, optimisation and safety programme, with the aim of assisting our supported sites in meeting their statutory and professional best practice obligations.

    The role will involve acting as MR Safety Expert, MR equipment procurement, commissioning and provision of QC, optimisation & radiation safety. The role will involve training / teaching other staff and there will be opportunities to develop services. The other areas of Non-ionising Radiations are led by another post, but collaboration will be welcomed. NIR modalities currently include; ultrasound imaging, lasers, UV & blue light phototherapy and other appropriate EMF areas.

    Job responsibilities

  • To assist with the development of clinical MRI services in a variety of clinical areas, to optimise MRI protocols and to assist with the procurement, evaluation, and planning of new MRI installations.
  • To translate research and innovation to the clinical environment advising other healthcare professionals and exploring new ways of working as a result.
  • To act as Trust Lead MR Safety Expert in providing MRI safety advice and MRI safety training for a range of healthcare professionals.
  • To perform MRI quality assurance procedures, develop these as required and interpret the results and provide recommendations when appropriate.
  • To provide training and teaching in MRI Physics for Medical Physics STP trainees, other trainees, other professional groups and students at Bournemouth University.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • BSc in Physics, Engineering, Computer Sciences or Life Sciences.
  • MSc in Medical Physics or Medical Imaging (or equivalent) and successful completion of the STP training scheme in an appropriate specialism or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Desirable

  • PhD in relevant discipline.
  • Chartered Physicist, Scientist or MIPEM equivalent.
  • Certification as a MRSE
  • Management qualification
  • Completion of HSST Training
  • Experience

    Essential

  • At least 4-6 years' experience in magnetic resonance imaging physics, and medical image processing
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience to act as a MRSE
  • Used to working in multidisciplinary teams. Experience in MR safety and quality assurance in a clinical environment.
  • Knowledge of MR Physics and its application in a clinical setting.
  • Awareness of recent developments in both clinical and/or research MRI applications. Presentation of scientific papers at local and national meetings.
  • Presentation of scientific papers at local and national meetings
  • Desirable

  • Post-doctoral experience in clinical MRI research.
  • Experience of team management
  • Success in obtaining research grants and income generation.
  • Publication of scientific papers or other reports.

  • Ability to operate MRI equipment independently
  • Strong mathematical skills, capable of analysing large amounts of data using modern software.
  • Ability to use and program using a range of software packages.
  • Ability to communicate complex data or facts to a variety of audiences.

  • Fluent in scientific programming in Python

  • Extensive scientific, clinical and safety knowledge of MRI.
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from the use of MRI
  • In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, national / international standards, professional and other guidelines.

  • Extensive scientific, clinical and safety knowledge of all non-ionising radiations used in medical practice.
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from a range of non-ionising radiation exposure.
