Job Introduction

The salary range for this position is £34,356 - £37,101 per annum based on a 36-hour working week.


Working as part of our residential service isn't a 9-5 job, it requires a degree of flexibility to ensure the safety of the children and young people within our homes.

Typically, we work on a rota basis and there may be times when you are required to work bank holidays, weekends or sleep-in overnight at the home.

We recognise that these aren't standard working hours and offer enhanced rates of pay for any unsociable hours worked.

As part of our capital development works and investment at Surrey we have developed and built two new state of the art children's homes to support our vision of 'Surrey homes for Surrey Children'.

We have recently completed recruitment to our Deputy Manager positions within the new homes and are now focused on finding 3 Residential Team Leaders (known as Portfolio Leads in Surrey) to join our new homes as we make preparations to welcome the first children and young people through our doors.


Our new homes are part of our ambition and purpose to ensure that every child in Surrey is seen, heard and can grow.

We believe that building effective relationships and using restorative approaches are key to supporting the children and young people.

Restoring and maintaining appropriate relationships, building on their talents and aspirations, and helping them to engage positively with education, and health and well-being resources are all central to improving outcomes for our children and young people.


About the role:


As a Children's Residential Team Leader you'll play a pivotal role for our children and young people and in the smooth daily running of your home, as you'll also support Deputy Managers as a lead staff member.


This role represents a great career step for a current Senior Residential Support Worker or aspiring Deputy Manager considering their professional development and first leadership role.

It provides an opportunity to develop key leadership skills, whilst remaining connected to children and young people through the delivery of individual and group interventions.

The growth and development of our children and young people will be at the heart of your practice, ensuring they are listened to, feel safe, have opportunities to participate in fun and creative activities and above all create the right conditions for them to feel safe and to succeed.


You will have a chance to manage several key workers, including undertaking their supervision, providing feedback, directing team meetings, and supporting with complex casework and care plans.

These will be essential skills and experiences in your journey towards becoming a Deputy Manager and progressing beyond within our service if that's your ambition.

You'll also have the opportunity demonstrate your passion for children and young people by becoming a specialist lead for one of our key practice areas, which include:

  • Management of risk
  • Families and relationships
  • Positive transitions, including housing
  • Education training and employment
  • Emotional health, selfworth, and wellbeing
  • Positive activities and achievements

About you:


  • A Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, or equivalent
  • It's not just about qualifications; it's about your ability to connect with young minds and provide them with a safe and nurturing environment too
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with children, adolescents, and their families
  • This will be crucial to your success
  • Understanding of the issues that affect children and young people including trauma, attachment, and contextual safeguarding
  • Your knowledge will be invaluable as you make informed decisions to guide their growth and development


  • Effective interagency working

  • Your experience in this area will be highly valued, as it will help foster collaboration and coordination among different stakeholders for the benefit of our children
  • Skills in effective assessment, risk management and strengthsbased care planning
  • We need someone who can create wellrounded care plans that consider each child's unique strengths and challenges
  • Experience of delivering statutory childcare services including the residential care of children and knowledge of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and Quality Standards
