The Opportunity:


The Centre for Open Learning (COL) is seeking enthusiastic University of Edinburgh students who have experience working with children and/or young people to serve as Resident Assistants for our summer Pre-university courses.

Generous renumeration and free catered accommodation will be provided.


The post holders will reside in University of Edinburgh accommodation for the entirety of the COL Summer School with our Pre-University students who are aged There will be between students in total.

Resident Assistants will be responsible for monitoring and supervising students, acting as the first point of contact for issues or concerns.

Daily attendance monitoring and curfew checks will need to be conducted, and the post holders must also coordinate check-in and check-out logistics, deliver ice breaker activities at the accommodation and attend pre-planned social programme activities.


The post holders will be part of a dedicated Resident Assistant team employed by the Centre for Open Learning and will operate within a prescribed rota.


The post holders will be provided with free catered accommodation when in post (breakfast and dinner is also included each day) and will have their own private bedroom.

Bathroom facilities are shared within the accommodation block.


Key Dates


Mandatory induction and training will take place on Wednesday 26 th June 2024, which all post holders must attend in-person at the University's Holyrood campus (exact location and specifics will be provided to successful applicants nearer the time).

The post will commence early Saturday morning on 29th June and end late morning on Saturday 13 th July weeks total duration).


Hours and Payment
The post holders will be paid for attending their induction and training.

Resident Assistants will be paid for 70 hours per week at Grade 5:
£14.11 per hour (plus annual leave allowance of 12.07%).


Post holders are not expected to be active for the full 70 hours per week, with time spent resting overnight.

However, as much of the work is 'on demand' and the post holders are required to respond to arising issues, flexibility will be required.


Your skills and attributes for success:

  • You are a current student at the University of Edinburgh.
  • You have experience working with children and/or young people.
  • You are able to attend the mandatory inperson induction and training on Wednesday 26 th June 202
  • You are able to commit to the dates specified for the post and agree to reside in the University accommodation we provide for the entire 2week period


It would also be desirable if you have existing membership in the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme arranged through the University of Edinburgh as part of your programme of study.
