    Derby DHS is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Visual Arts Teacher. The capacity to teach other Arts Learning Area contexts would be advantageous, including Media and Drama, depending on the business needs of the school.

    Derby DHS is situated in the town of Derby at the southern end of King Sound in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Derby DHS is located in attractive and well-maintained grounds and surroundings. With an enrolment of over 600 students, it provides an education program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students attend the school from the town of Derby and outlying areas including the Aboriginal Communities of Mowanjum and Pandanus Park.

    About the Role

    Derby DHS has a well-established Visual Arts program. The incoming teacher would ensure that programs continue to engage and challenge students. They should also provide students with opportunities to showcase their achievements at school and in the wider community.

    The successful applicant would ideally have excellent interpersonal skills and will be capable of creating high quality, effective teaching and learning experiences for students in Visual Arts. As Derby DHS is a Positive Behaviour Support (SSPBiS) school, the desire to invest in developing positive working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and the local community is a key focus for Derby DHS staff. The successful applicant will ideally be able to teach Visual Arts across Years They should also be able to use Visual Arts as a vehicle for teaching problem solving, collaboration, communication, critical and creative thinking skills to students.

    Derby is 220 km east of Broome by road and is 2463 km north of Perth. It was the first town settled in the Kimberley. The town is well supported with a range of government infrastructures. Its location near the King Sound and several rivers provides for many boating and fishing recreational activities - but not swimming

    Derby DHS is a dynamic school with a highly motivated, supportive, and collaborative staff of over 100 people. The collaborative approach, exciting work environment and the students make it a great place to teach. Staff are passionate about improving standards in Education, particularly in Aboriginal Education. There is an active and strong social club to ensure that staff are well supported both in and out of school.

    This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
