    Job overview

    The role of the EPAU Nurse Sonographer in early pregnancy care is intended to enhance the care for women (and their partners) who may be concerned about a complication in early pregnancy.

    The post holder will support women experiencing pregnancy loss and also engage collaboratively in supporting women who are, and remain, pregnant.

    The post holder will be able to use ultrasound scan to confirm the location and viability of a pregnancy and provide a management plan for women diagnosed with miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

    The post holder will be able to provide leadership, whilst improving access to relevant services such as ultrasound, and supporting women who are having or have had a miscarriage, ectopic or molar pregnancy.

    Main duties of the job

  • To provide safe, effective, excellent woman-centred care by clearly defining and explaining the extent of presenting symptoms, and providing the continuity of carer and care, whilst working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team
  • To provide, co-ordinate and organise nurse-led services for patients, ensuring timely and effective treatment. Demonstrate a high level of specialist expertise, providing advice, support and education to other health professionals, patients and carers.
  • To develop and maintain positive working relationships with other health care professionals especially general practice services (general practitioners and practice nurses), midwives and obstetricians
  • To provide clinical supervision for others, presenting case studies and learning from practice.
  • To provide excellent nursing clinical care, including counselling and psychological support

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Be a competent nurse sonographer, performing ultrasound and producing clinical accurate reports and communicating findings effectively to patient, family and multidisciplinary team
  • Perform ultrasound scans in accordance with safety guidance and management of findings as per unit guidelines
  • Facilitate and enable the education of patients and their carers to maximise their quality of life.
  • To be an advocate for the patient in relation to lost pregnancy and treatment, acting as the central point of contact for women
  • To assess the needs of patients and their families and to provide the appropriate level of intervention / support in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Use patient experience feedback and facilitate patient involvement to ensure the services are patient centred.
  • To discuss options for the treatment of pregnancy loss with the patient and their relatives in appropriate depth with sensitivity and expertise.
  • Being available as a point of contact to give information and advice to patients, colleagues and the public in person, over the phone and via email.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable form to patients, relatives and other staff, ensuring understanding of their condition.
  • Effective communication in own team, the wider MDT and other agencies to foster good relationships between other services women may require
  • Ensure that all clinical practice is evidence-based, drawing on published literature and policy guidelines to achieve evidence-based practice in the delivery of care.
  • To be aware of current national developments within the specialty and utilise this knowledge to support the development of the service.

    Training & Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • Professional NMC Registration
  • •Have undertaken a CASE (Consortium of Accredited Sonographic Education) programme of training for ultrasound in early pregnancy or similar
  • Desirable criteria

  • History Taking and Physical Assessment course.
  • Experience & Knowledge

    Essential criteria

  • Experience working within a gynaecology or women's health setting
  • Desirable criteria

  • Have insight into the conditions that may impact on early pregnancy development and all the areas of management
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD)
