STFC's Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) mission is to build the 'Big Science' facilities of the future; we design, build and operate particle accelerators and make major contributions to many of the biggest projects in the world today, workingwith high-profile national and international partners.
The Vacuum Solutions Group (VSG) are looking to recruit a Vacuum Scientist to be part of the R&D team for particle accelerators.
The role includes devising scientific experiments to measure the performance of a range of vacuum diagnostics, gauges and pumps,alongside testing new developments in the vacuum market that will enhance accelerator vacuum performance.
- Perform practical 'handson' tasks and oversee mechanical installation, assembly and commissioning tasks on complex vacuum systems
- Carry out research programmes on a range of vacuum topics including outgassing of materials and calibration of vacuum diagnostics, gauges and pumps.
- Understanding the mechanisms of gas sorption/desorption on surfaces and measurement of outgassing
- Modelling the behaviour of vacuum systems by using advanced computational techniques
- Write reports & scientific papers, present your work to peers and collaborators at internal, national and international meetings & learn and further selfdevelop in the field of accelerator science and technologies
Essential:
- Minimum of a Masters in Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or relevant science degree
- Evidence of practical aptitude, ability to do 'hands on' tasks (S&I)
- Knowledge and experience of some or all of the following:
- Vacuum systems; scientific instruments; data collection and analysis. (S&I)
- Experience of scientific research relevant to the role (S&I)
- Good technical communication skills and ability to work using own initiative (S&I)
