STFC's Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) mission is to build the 'Big Science' facilities of the future; we design, build and operate particle accelerators and make major contributions to many of the biggest projects in the world today, workingwith high-profile national and international partners.

The Vacuum Solutions Group (VSG) are looking to recruit a Vacuum Scientist to be part of the R&D team for particle accelerators.

The role includes devising scientific experiments to measure the performance of a range of vacuum diagnostics, gauges and pumps,alongside testing new developments in the vacuum market that will enhance accelerator vacuum performance.

Perform practical 'handson' tasks and oversee mechanical installation, assembly and commissioning tasks on complex vacuum systems
Carry out research programmes on a range of vacuum topics including outgassing of materials and calibration of vacuum diagnostics, gauges and pumps.
Understanding the mechanisms of gas sorption/desorption on surfaces and measurement of outgassing
Modelling the behaviour of vacuum systems by using advanced computational techniques
Write reports & scientific papers, present your work to peers and collaborators at internal, national and international meetings & learn and further selfdevelop in the field of accelerator science and technologies

Essential:

Minimum of a Masters in Physics/Chemistry/Engineering or relevant science degree
Evidence of practical aptitude, ability to do 'hands on' tasks (S&I)
Knowledge and experience of some or all of the following:
Vacuum systems; scientific instruments; data collection and analysis. (S&I)
Experience of scientific research relevant to the role (S&I)
Good technical communication skills and ability to work using own initiative (S&I)
