  • This is an exciting opportunity to join our Area Fisheries team in the North-East as a Fisheries Technical Specialist. In this role, you will provide the fisheries function with technical direction and advice within a small team of fisheries officers. Working with colleagues and customers, you will help maintain, improve and develop freshwater fish populations and opportunities for angling in the North-East, while protecting and enhancing the wider environment.

Within this role you:

  • Oversee the provision of technical fisheries advice to relevant Environment Agency programmes, plans and projects to ensure compliance with legislation as well as habitat creation and the enhancement of fish populations.
  • Oversee the provision of fisheries management advice to internal and external customers.
  • Work with customers and partners, as well as internal colleagues, to identify opportunities to enhance fish passage and improve freshwater habitats.
  • Work with Biodiversity and Geomorphology colleagues to identify and influence opportunities to deliver multiple benefits for the environment and to work with natural processes.
  • Respond to environmental incidents, including pollution incidents and fish mortalities.
  • Provide technical support, leadership and mentoring to the wider fisheries team.

  • The team 1

  • You will join an experienced and supportive team of technical officers who integrate fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology expertise to deliver our functional, corporate and statutory duties and priorities. You will be working in a diverse and beautiful part of the country with a mix of rural and urban areas, upland and lowland rivers, species and habitats, helping to protect and manage some of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in England.

  • Experience/skills required 1

  • We are seeking a Fisheries Technical Specialist with extensive field and deskbased experience in freshwater fisheries biology and ecology, and proven ability in delivering fisheries technical advisory and regulatory work.

You will have at least an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, together with several year experience of fisheries management and regulation and a full UK driving license.

You should also have:

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence a broad range of customers
  • Be highly motivated and adaptable in delivering priorities
  • Be able to build, develop and nurture relationships
  • A strong track record of collaborating with others to deliver shared priorities and outcomes
  • Demonstrable skill and experience in technical leadership and mentoring
  • Knowledge of biodiversity and geomorphology would also be an advantage
  • Contact and additional information 1
  • This role is office/desk based but involves travel across the area and work in the field, as a result a full driving license is required.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role and ensure it is manageable for you personally.

All Environment Agency staff receive training to support our response to environmental incidents.
