    Job overview

    Applications are invited for the full time substantive post of Consultant Gastroenterologist at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is a new appointment to join three Consultant Gastroenterologists. Any subspecialty interest that complemented the existing department would be considered, however expertise in inflammatory bowel disease or hepatology would be desirable.

    Main duties of the job

The Gastroenterology Department is dynamic and progressive, with the team comprising: one Specialist Registrar, Core Trainees and Foundation Doctors; 3 IBD clinical nurse specialists (CNS) with further administrative and specialist pharmacy support; 2 Nutrition CNS; 2 upper GI and 4 colorectal cancer CNS; 1 iron deficiency anaemia CNS; and 4 Nurse Endoscopists. We have a recently refurbished 3 room endoscopy department and provide Bowel Cancer Screening along with diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy, ERCP, and capsule enteroscopy. Complimentary disciplines at DCH include on-site colorectal and upper GI surgery, interventional radiology, histopathololgy and oncology.

    The post-holder would contribute to in- and out-patient gastroenterology services and be part of a GI bleed rota (1 in 7), and weekday specialty post take review but no commitment to the General Medical rota. The post is full-time (10 PAs) and will be paid according to the new consultant contract salary scale. Less than full-time applicants will be considered.

    This post is located at Dorset County Hospital (DCH). The Trust serves a population of approximately 250,000 and is situated in the historic town of Dorchester in an attractive part of Dorset. The area is served by high quality schools and is close to some of the most beautiful coastline in the UK.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    The department of gastroenterology provides gastroenterological services to West Dorset and South Somerset, with over 1500 new outpatient referrals to the department anticipated in the next year, and over 8000 endoscopy procedures per annum.
    The successful candidate will:

    Provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease in Dorset to a level consistent with the Trust's vision of "Delivering compassionate and safe healthcare".

    Participate fully in the provision of general Gastroenterological inpatient, outpatient and endoscopic services.

    Take part in weekday specialty Gastroenterology take when covering the ward, with no commitment to the general medical take.

    Take part in the out of hours GI bleed endoscopy rota (1 in 7).

    Participate fully in the ongoing development of the Gastroenterology service, in line with national and NICE guidelines.

    A sub-specialty interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Hepatology would be particularly welcome although any sub-specialty interests that complement the existing department would be welcomed.

    Essential criteria

    • GMC Registration with Licence to Practice
    • Higher UK clinical qualification (MRCP) or overseas equivalent
    • Awarded CCT or on Specialist Register

    Desirable criteria

    • 5 years clinical experience in Gastroenterology & General Medicine post membership
