    Description

The Languages Department offers courses in French, German and Spanish. It benefits from a highly qualified staff of eleven modern languages teachers and three Foreign Language Assistants. In recent years, our numbers across the languages and year groups have grown significantly with particularly growth in French and Spanish A level numbers.

The Languages Department has pleasant accommodation in its own block with well-equipped classrooms and office.

Currently, on entry in Year 7 students have the choice of two Modern Languages from French, German and Spanish which they follow until the end of Year 9, at which stage they will choose their options for IGCSE. All students are required to study at least one language to IGCSE and many students opt to take two.

Students prepare for the Edexcel IGCSE examinations in modern languages. Across the languages, we use a variety of textbooks, web resources and our own resources, which colleagues share with each other.

French, German and Spanish are taught to A level in the Sixth Form using the Edexcel specifications for French and German and AQA for Spanish. We have Foreign Language Assistants for all the languages who take conversation classes with very small A level groups and assist our Year 11 students in preparation for their IGCSE oral examination. They also play an active role in the College life and departmental activities.

We take a communicative approach to language learning but this is underpinned by a solid base of grammar structures. Interaction in the target language through pair-work, role plays and presentations is encouraged but the appreciation of accurate structure and use of extended vocabulary are regarded as an essential foundation for effective communication.

Our exam results at both IGCSE and A level are consistently impressive and outperform average grades achieved by both the Independent and Secondary Selective sectors, which reflects the nature of our very capable and motivated students as well as excellent teaching practices.

The Department organises a variety of activities and range of trips. We plan trips to Paris, Montpellier, Valencia, Andalusia, Cologne and the Rhineland with other destinations under consideration. Teachers are expected to support our portfolio of trips by either organising or staffing them.

In addition to trips the Department runs a range of well supported extra-curricular activities such as Theatre trips, Talks, Foreign Film Club, Oxbridge Extension Sessions and Surgeries which colleagues are expected to support.

THE POST OF TEACHER OF FRENCH

We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher who will be able to offer French to A level. The candidate may already have experience of teaching the A level specification and to be confident teaching a study of Literature or Film. The ability to teach another language to KS3 or KS4 is desirable.

The successful candidate will need to be fully up to date on teaching MFL using modern techniques as well as able to demonstrate strategies to stretch the most able within a selective environment but also support those who find learning languages more challenging. Willingness to participate in educational trips, either residential or as day excursions, as well as the Department's extra-curricular activities and surgeries is viewed as a pre-requisite. The post would suit an NQT or a more experienced teacher.

Single staff accommodation may be available on-site.
