Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the shift management and clinical leadership of the midwifery service. They will be expected to ensure high standards of maternity care through effective management of staff by leading the team, organising others in their actions and setting priorities. They will be an effective team player, leader and able to drive quality improvement initiatives.
Liaise with and collaborate across the maternity service to ensure a seamless service that provides personalised and women-centred care.
They will assess the full range of care needs and develop, implement and evaluate provision of care throughout the childbirth continuum for women and their babies and escalate concerns to the relevant professional.
The post holder will assist with management of staff on the unit and contribute to the delivery of the maternity unit objectives in line with the Trust Maternity Strategy Towards Excellence.

Job descriptionJob responsibilities
To take responsibility for the day to dayrunning of Labour Ward.
Ensure delivery of safe and effective care acrossthe maternity unit through effective management of staff and resources acrossthe unit.
Act as a visible leader within the MaternityUnit and undertake the role of Senior Clinical Midwife for the maternity unitout of hours.
Maintain a safe and clean environment for staffand service users by ensuring compliance with legislation, polices, protocolsincluding health and safety, healthcare associated infection, risk managementand critical incident reporting.
Promote a positive professional attitude for the profession and the Trust at all times.
Maintain staff morale and good working relationships.
Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies, ensuring seamless care at a high standard.
Ensure that a high level of safe care isdelivered to women and their babies whilst adhering to obstetric guidance andcare plans by providing specialist midwifery expertise and ensuring that allstaff are supported in their practice on a continual basis.
Ensure the dignity, respect and privacy of allwomen being cared for on Labour Ward is maintained at all times.
Ensure that Maternity Service Guidelines areimplemented and monitored in accordance with the Trust and NMC Guidance.
Maintain expert evidence-based professionalknowledge and competence.
Be an expert in all midwifery and clinicalcompetencies including normalising birth across the risk continuum, waterbirths, bereavement care, obstetric emergencies, perineal suturing, epiduralanalgesia, intravenous cannulation, adult and neonatal resuscitation, scrubbingfor theatre and post-operative recovery. Be able to demonstrate, supervise andsupport other midwives and maternity support workers in these skills.
Support the clinical expertise of midwiveswithin the Maternity Unit by role modelling evidence based care andpersonalised, women-centred care.
Demonstrate overt professional leadership andclinical expertise and foster a culture where all staff can develop theirclinical expertise and confidence and feel valued.
To work with the Labour Ward Manager wand Matronto share and drive innovation within the workforce and maternity service.
To act as an advocate for women, and in linewith the National Maternity Review ensure that every woman has personalisedcare that is centred on their individual needs and circumstances.
With the introduction of the Continuity of Carerpathway act as the contact for the community and continuity midwives during outof hours home births and provide advice and support as required when theypractice on the maternity unit.
Actively support and provide a link betweenlabour ward and continuity of carer teams.
Ensure that initial appropriate care/remedialaction is taken to ensure safety of women and staff and actions are clearlydocumented and escalated in the most relevant appropriate manner.
Anticipate potential problems and developcontingency plans to resolve or effectively manage these situations.
Maintain accurate management records at alltimes, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used.
Coordinate and liaise with multidisciplinaryagencies to provide care to women and their families with additional needs, for psychiatric, social problems, child protection, disability etc.
Ensure bereaved women and their relatives aresupported and receive appropriate care, whilst ensuring other staff aresupported during this process.
Be professionally accountable for own midwiferypractice, acting in a professional manner at all times abiding by the NMC Codeand all other relevant NMC and the Trusts values, policies and guidelines.
Be responsible for the annual appraisal andperformance review of an identified group of colleagues.
