    Job Description:


    An opportunity for enthusiastic orthoptists to join our Orthoptic team at Queen's Medical Centre campus on a bank contract.

    The role is suitable for orthoptists with previous hospital experience and will cover a range of clinics including paediatric and adult ocular motility clinics, the assessment of patients referred from eye casualty and the maxillofacial and neurology units.

    The department has a significant role in the training of Orthoptic undergraduates, optometrists, medical students, post graduate medics and other health professionals and the post holder would be expected to contribute to this clinical teaching role if they hold the appropriate experience.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to orthoptic undergraduates on placement to the department
    • Take responsibility for an individual caseload of orthoptic patients with complex presentation and needs and provide specialist advice to other health professionals regarding patient management
    • Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework.
    • Maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills required to practise as an orthoptist and keep a personal professional development portfolio.
    • Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to medical students, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and other health professionals visiting the orthoptic department each week.
    • As a Specialist Orthoptist, maintain the delivery of a high standard of clinical work within all aspects of the orthoptic practise and clinical teaching.
    • To participate in departmental audit and research projects
    • Work as an autonomous practitioner in undertaking orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly and who have various communication abilities and who have been referred from a variety of sources.
    • Ensure compliance with infection control procedures.

    Job Requirements:

    • Formal Presentations
    • BIOS recognised teaching course/qualification
    • HPC registration
    • Clinical teaching of Orthoptic undergraduates
    • Clinical audit and research
    • Theoretical and clinical teaching of Orthoptics to health professionals
    • Recent clinical experience as an autonomous practitioner
    • Diploma/degree in Orthoptics
