    The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Senior Workshop Technician to join its Research Design and Manufacturing facility.

    Supporting the ground-breaking research undertaken across the Departments Academic disciplines, the RDM Workshop team is a key component in our research having real-world impacts on commercial, medical and environmental endeavours. With over 50 Academics and more than 280 research staff and students working on a range of topics from medical implants & surgical techniques to new-age engine & fuel technologies, the demand for manufacturing high-quality components has never been higher

    The postholder will work within the RDM Workshops liaising with Academics, Researchers and suppliers to provide a comprehensive design and manufacturing service. They will use their significant knowledge of traditional and modern engineering techniques to consult on project designs for fabrication. The post holder will be a key member of the RDMW team and be open to design and manufacturing challenges with the desire to aid in advancing the departments academic research projects.

  • You will be working as part of the Department's Research Design and Manufacturing Workshop team to provide machining and engineering support and solutions for our ground-breaking research.
  • You will collaborate with Academics and Researchers to find solutions for components, sub-assemblies, and whole assemblies.
  • You will have the ability to read and understand complex technical drawings and plan methodically for manufacture
  • You will prepare CAD models and technical drawings for manufacture.
  • You will perform high-level CNC operations.
  • You will help maintain the workflow and have input on processes and procedure
  • You will support the development of early-career technicians within the workshop
  • Members of our Technical Services team are provided support to build on & expand the skills gained during formal training, to help you develop and progress as an engineering technician. This includes opportunities to connect and learn in the wider Department technical facilities and networks.

  • You need to have completed a recognised apprenticeship / HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), and have an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant accredited workplace.
  • You must have significant experience in a highly relevant environment post-qualification, such as in a research workshop.
  • You will have the ability to assess requests for feasibility and be able to plan processes through to manufacture
  • A thorough knowledge of programming, setting and operating CNC turning and milling tools is essential.
  • You have a high level of skill in using traditional machining techniques, measuring techniques and hand tools
  • You will have an understanding of the use of Wire EDM machines
  • You must be able to demonstrate an appreciation of health & safety in a workshop environment.
