Research Fellow in Biopolymers and Coatings - London, United Kingdom - UCL

    UCL
    Default job background
    Full time, Fixed-Term/Contract
    Description

    About us

UCL is one of the foremost universities in the world. It provides a highly stimulating multidisciplinary environment for learning and for scientific research. The post will underpin our activities in 3D printing and coatings technologies based on biopolymers such as cellulose, chitosan etc. as part of an EPSRC Sustainable Manufacturing grant focused on waste valorisation. Currently, our emphasis is on multifunctional and robust 3D printed components or wet-processed surface treatments (e.g. highly liquid repellent, superhydrophobic/superoleophobic surfaces). We seek to explore mechano-chemical robustness of 3D printed objected and nanoengineered coatings using such waste-derived polymers. Applications can range from smart structures, scaffolds, optically transparent non-wetting surface treatments, surfaces for phase change control (for icephobicity and condensation control) or anti-biofouling against biofilms etc.

    About the role

UCL Mechanical Engineering is pleased to be searching for a new Research Fellow in Biopolymers and Coatings to join our Bloomsbury campus where they will:

    • Develop new 3D printing and/or coatings formulations based on industrial waste-derived biopolymers - Develop strategies to purify raw biopolymers and/or their characterization.
    • Perform image analysis, data acquisition/processing & interpretation
    • Actively initiate, partake and/or lead on public engagement activities
    • Be committed to contribute to periodical research progress reports and presentations as part of the project deliverables
    • To contribute to the wider affiliated Centres and Institutes and be involved in seminar series, public engagement, tutorials and other activities
    • Deliver publications, or other research outputs, in line with personal objectives agreed with line manager.
    • Carry out any other duties (such as teaching) as requested by the line manager.

    About you

This post is a part of an EPSRC sustainable manufacturing project and benefits from a direct collaborations with a teams led by Profs. Gary Lye (Biochemical Engineering), Helen Hails (Chemistry), Asterios Gavriilidis and Paola Lettieri (Chemical Engineering) at UCL.

A strong knowledge in polymers processing, characterization and related formulations is required. The successful candidate will perform experiments on (bio)polymer structure modification through post-functionalisation, cross-linking and composite fabrication and characterization. A knowledge in 3D printing technique and liquid-repellent coatings is desirable.

The post is initially funded for one year and three months and will be subject to standard probation and appraisal procedures. Appointment at grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at the Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £37,332 - £39,980 per annum including London Allowance).
