Software Engineer - Experiment Controls

Salary:
£31,931 to £44,166 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). A Specialist Allowance of up to £4000 per annum is also available for this role. An on-call allowance is payable when applicable.

As a controls software engineer you will be playing a key role writing and supporting software to direct and automate experiments taking place on beamlines at the ISIS neutron and muon source.

We are located at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory andISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences.

You will work alongside scientists and technicians, from gathering requirements to deploying and debugging, so they can get the best out of the software driving the experiment.

We use the EPICS open source controls collaboration toolkit, engaging with and contributing to this worldwide community.

We develop software on the Windows platform using a mixture of the domain specific languages provided by EPICS as well as Java, C++ andPython.

The scope of software development ranges from crafting low-level device control drivers to producing high-level graphical user interfaces for staff and visiting scientists.

Person Specification

You will have:


  • A sound understanding of objectoriented software development and software architecture
  • Understanding of modern software development practices (e.g. testing, version control, continuous integration)
  • Good verbal and written communications skills including the ability to explain complex concepts effectively and document controls requirements
  • The ability to work both independently and within a dynamic, agile team environment
  • The ability to take initiative and proactive attitude to problem solving with a thorough and logical approach
  • For appointment at the higher grade, proven skills in leadership and management of tasks/projects/people
  • For appointment at the higher grade, proven technical leadership skills

Flexible working:


The nature of controls means we cannot work entirely remotely, we currently work in a hybrid manner (typically 3 days a week onsite).

We also provide some out of hours support, shared within the group, during the day when user experiment are running.

Withinthis, we welcome you to ask about the flexibility you need, this might be part-time (minimum 22 hours per week), or compressed hours for example.
