Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust (UHL) merged with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Woolwich in October 2013.

The Orthopaedic department runs separate on-call rotas and Trauma services for each hospital, but operates as a single department across both hospital sites.

The directorate provides an extensive orthopaedic and trauma service for the reception, assessment, examination and treatment of people with abnormalities of the musculoskeletal system or who have sustained a recent injury.

Emergency services are currently provided at both QEH and UHL.

In addition, elective day case and inpatient elective services are provided at UHL, day case only elective services are provided at QEH.

Trauma theatre lists and fracture clinics are held at both hospital sites, with elective outpatients also provided at both UHL and QEH.

A virtual fracture clinic runs in conjunction with face-to-face clinics. Cross-site review of patients waiting on our trauma dashboards takes place daily. There are daily joint trauma meetings to assure all emergency patients are treated in a timely fashion.

The post holder will be expected to operate on both sites depending on the needs of the service, and this applies to both elective and emergency activities.

The directorate organises trauma on CEPOD principles with most trauma performed on a daily dedicated trauma lists under consultant supervision.
