    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse on the Medical Assessment Unit (Chestnut ward UHL). ( One full-time post ( hours) available. )

    Chestnut Ward is a 46 bedded acute medical unit with 4 cardiac monitored bed. There is a strong focus on both team and multidisciplinary working to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. A necessity for this role is to have a broad general medicine base and a flexible ability to work.

    You will have some experience of coordinating a busy ward area whilst supporting a team, be highly motivated and have a genuine desire to provide high quality patient care. You must be an experienced individual with appropriate clinical experience to enable you to lead and support the provision of safe, personalised and effective patient care. You will be expected to work with the team to promote change and continue the development of the unit and staff.

    Main duties of the job

    You will be expected to maintain high standards of care, meeting national and local standards with regards to quality, safety and length of stay within the unit. As Sister/Charge Nurse you will be expected to promote innovative thinking and provide supportive leadership and managerial support to the team.

    You will line manage a team of Nurses and HCAs, working with the Senior Sister to support staff development, manage sickness/absence and other HR related issues and ensure safe staffing levels through roster management.

    Job responsibilities

    Key Result Areas:

    Assess, plan, implement and evaluate a high standard of nursing care incorporating research/ evidence-based practice as appropriate.Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other the safe administration and custody of drugs in accordance with National and hospitalpolicies and guidelines.Develop and maintain effective and adequate channels of communication between patients,relatives, medical and ward staff.Promote and assist in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for patients, visitors andstaffDemonstrate awareness and understanding of individual customs, values and spiritual needs.Acknowledge limitations in knowledge and skills and seek advice from senior colleagues in the maintenance and continuing development of protocols and standards of care tomaximise patient care and safety.Participate in the evaluation, research and audit of methods of care and implement findingsas aware of current advances in clinical care and facilitate team members in theimplementation of knowledge and co-ordinate the ward or department in the absence of senior staff within allocatedresources.Demonstrate an awareness of patient dependency and ensure the ward is adequately coveredwhen sickness/absence adherence to all relevant hospital policies including health and safety at work, manualhandling, fire, confidentiality, data protection and incident and accident reporting.Delegate tasks appropriately having regard for individual abilities and competence.Support and assist the Ward Manager in the establishment of a good working atmosphereconducive to patient care.Participate in regular team / ward meetings to establish and maintain effective communicationand improve quality of care.

    Performance Ensure legible, written clinical documentation and nursing notes as well as computer data aremaintained in line with NMC standards of record keeping.Participate in the evaluation, audit and research of methods of care.Prioritise and delegate effectively to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients throughoutthe act as a role model to peer groups, other health professionals and the general public at alltimes.

    Work force Take personal responsibility for own professional development and clinical updates inconjunction with individual performance review.Supervise and mentor students in the clinical areaAssist in the development and delivery of ward based teaching an active role in advising patients, relatives and colleagues on issues of conjunction with educational establishments assist in maintaining a clinical environmentconducive to learning.

    Financial Utilise resources effectively and efficiently being aware of budget responsibilities andlimitations.

    Partnerships Work effectively with all agencies in ensuring the safe and timely discharge of patients into thecommunity utilising all available services.

    General Undertake all relevant clinical and non-clinical functions in accordance with grade.

    Qualifications and Training

    Essential

  • 1st level registration with NMC Minimum of 2 years' experience at Band 5 working in an acute medical setting
  • Fundamentals of Medicine Course
  • Desirable

  • Evidence of continuing professional development to degree level. High Dependency Nursing module or equivalent Management experience or course
  • Experience

    Essential

  • To have post registration experience in an acute medical setting with a significant time spent in a cardiology unit
  • To have experience of working in a teaching environment. To demonstrate up to date knowledge of relevant current nursing issues.
