- Proficiency in networking concepts at all levels of the OSI 7-layer model, especially in relation to the IP protocol stack
- Solid knowledge and understanding of common LAN and WAN technologies such as: copper and fibre transmission, routing and switching protocols such as QoS, VLAN, VxLAN, SD-WAN
- Enterprise wireless technologies, standards and RF operation
- Knowledge of modern structured cabling standards and their implementation
- Understanding of encryption and PKI principles
- Practical understanding of network application protocols such as DHCP, DNS, SNMP, SIP and others
- Manage and implement IT infrastructure installation and network provisioning projects as directed, liaising as required with schools, faculties, departments and external suppliers.
- Ensure that new data network installations conform to the university's formal technical specifications.
- Co-manage the stock of both active and passive components for the data network and related infrastructure, ensuring that these are deployed and replenished appropriately within budget.
- Assist in the management and operation of the network, maintaining levels of high availability and performance in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
- Develop and administer the active network equipment, network security systems and network service systems, implementing agreed changes.
- Assist in setting the strategy, design and the implementation of modifications to, and enhancements of the extent and configuration of the university's IT networks.
