Role purpose:


At ShelterBox we believe that community and Rotary engagement is crucial in developing deep, long term relationships with our supporters.

We are the team who inspire and support fundraisers and communities in taking action to help families who have lost everything to disaster.

Volunteers are at the heart of this plan - directly raising income but also vital awareness in communities across the UK.

ShelterBox was built from a history of passionate volunteers, and we are looking for someone to help us write the next chapter of this story.


The Community Volunteer Engagement Officer will deliver a fully integrated community volunteer programme maximising awareness and income generated from volunteers.

The main responsibility of the role will be to manage, train and engage our network of over 90 community volunteers.

You will be supporting them to engage and inspire their local communities to help grow our supporter base, drive sustainable income, and generate long-term meaningful relationships.

Our plans also set out the strategic growth of our community volunteer networks, working alongside the Community Team on key geographical areas of focus.


Who are we looking for?


ShelterBox is seeking a strong communicator (written and verbal) who enjoys inspiring and motivating volunteers, with a high level of attention to detail.

They should be a confident relationship manager with an ability to build and maintain strong and successful relationships with a range of individuals and organisations.

Being able to work effectively as part of a wider team is also key.


It is important that you have a working knowledge and understanding of engaging with volunteers, alongside comprehensive project management and community engagement experience.

You should also have an ability to focus on both long and short-term objectives.


Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • To lead on the development and roll out of our community volunteer programme, identifying areas of growth and undertaking regular analysis to increase the awareness, engagement and income generating opportunities through our volunteer network
  • To recruit, train, inspire, engage and manage our network of community volunteers to assist with all fundraising activities
  • Actively seek opportunities to broaden the demographic of our community volunteer network
  • Upskill and support our community volunteer network by providing training, resources and information for volunteers to confidently connect with key community audiences
  • Review, develop and implement a plan to improve upon our resources utilised by volunteers, both generic and for key specific audiences working with both the wider Community and Supporter Engagement Team.
  • Review and implement a communication journey which supports all community volunteers ensuring they receive a positive and engaging experience with a calendar of asks to engage our key audiences with
  • Lead on the development of systems and processes for our community volunteer network to ensure accurate communication, financial and activity records are maintained
  • To regularly analyse and review volunteer activity performance, sharing results with wider Community Team to support the development and delivery of effective fundraising initiatives and operational plans
  • Working closely with wider Community Team to support promotion of campaigns and activities through our volunteer network, giving them the tools to do this, helping to achieve targets
  • Provide key support with the development and roll out of our hotspot approach, helping to achieve increased engagement and income opportunities within identified areas
  • To work to set income and expenditure budgets, monitoring costs and trends, reporting and analysing performance and implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with wider Community Team to ensure our community volunteer programme helps to deepen supporter engagement, working towards shared goals and supporting on specific projects where appropriate.

General duties:


  • Producing detailed annual action plans and evaluations on specific areas of responsibility, identifying areas for growth/development and outlining measurable objectives.
  • Objectively review the success and achievements against agreed targets, identifying strengths, weaknesses and areas for development
  • Contribute new ideas and continually seek to improve processes to drive efficiency and increase income.
  • Participate in the day to day work of the organisation such as reporting, attending team meetings as required, and taking a flexible approach
  • Representing ShelterBox at supporter/public events, delivering presentations where necessary.
  • Keep volunteer and community fundraising sector knowledge current and share learnings with the tea
