Job overview:


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Practitioner / Technical Instructor within the Greater Manchester Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) outreach service based at Salford Royal Hospital, working collaboratively with Southport Spinal Cord Injury Centre.

This team is committed to improving and transforming the lifelong care of patients with SCI.


As part of a multidisciplinary team you will provide support to SCI patients within inpatient hospital settings across Greater Manchester.


The postholder will be a highly motivated and experienced therapy assistant, care support worker and / or will have relevant experience and training within sports physiology and personal training.


They will support the SCI outreach MDT, in the delivery of assessment, exercise and activity programmes, education and advice to patients, other professionals, families and carers.


The postholder will oversee the SCI outreach services designated specialist seating, moving and handling, and rehabilitation equipment, to ensure appropriate rehabilitation strategies are implemented without delay.

Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, proactive approach to service and professional development are essential. Excellent organisational abilities and the flexibility to travel across Greater Manchester will also be required.


Main duties of the job:


  • To assist the delivery of the spinal cord injury outreach service for Greater Manchester in collaboration with Southport SCIC outreach team
  • To assist the registered professionals including Consultant, specialist nurses, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech and language therapist in the implementation, delivery and evaluation of assessments, rehabilitation and education programmes for inpatients and outpatients with SCI across Greater Manchester.
  • To use technical and creative skills in the provision of rehabilitative activities for individual patients and will be responsible for evaluating and amending treatment programmes and interventions with guidance from the registered AHP professionals
  • To take a lead in provision and retrieval, stock take, maintenance and monitoring of specialist seating, wheelchairs and associated resources allocated to the SCI outreach service
  • To assist in delivery and set up of rehabilitation equipment for patients with SCI
  • To take responsibility for their own workload within a broad framework laid out by a qualified Therapist. The postholder will be responsible for delivering defined Therapy input without direct supervision, but will have immediate access to a Therapist for advice and direction as required
  • The work will take place within inpatient settings across Greater Manchester

Essential Qualifications and Experience:


Essential criteria:


  • Relevant health and / or social care qualification at NVQ level 3 or above
  • REPS accredited Level 2/3 gym instructor / personal trainer qualification / GP referral or equivalent
  • Proven awareness of Health and Safety Regulations related to healthcare and physical activities
  • Good IT skills

Desirable criteria:


  • Level 3 / 4 REP's / CIMSPA and/or Recent Level 4 course in cardiac / pulmonary / cancer rehab etc.
  • Experience of working with patients with SCI
  • Relevant qualification related to sports science or equivalent sports related diploma or degree

Previous employment and experience:


Essential criteria:


  • Previous experience working as a gym instructor or therapy assistant or care support worker working individually or with groups of patients / clients designing and progressing exercise and activity programmes
  • Good understanding and experience of working with clients wi
