    The Senior Director Government Affairs and Communications leads the Lilly Public Affairs strategy and team for the Northern European Hub, (UK, Nordic affiliates and Ireland) working in close partnership with business leaders to deliver an integrated, multi-stakeholder strategy that drives business goals.

    The role is accountable for shaping and defending Lilly's licence to operate, advancing the Lilly brand and creating opportunities for Lilly's current and future portfolio via strategic relationship building; including trade association engagement, government relations, media relations, advocacy and integrated campaign development, ensuring all activities are conducted in line with market regulations and Codes of Practice. The role is split between leadership/ Corporate Affairs governance and individual contribution as a SME in both communications/advocacy and government relations/policy.

    Key responsibilities:

    Leadership. Leading a diverse and high performing team of subject experts, ensuring cross-functioning working and delivery of integrated, prioritised Public Affairs programme and projects. Must bring demonstrable experience of leading stakeholder strategies with UK government and top tier media. Responsible for team resourcing and recruitment, budget and compliance.

    Government Relations. Deliver best-in-class government relations, in partnership with Lilly's Global Public Policy and European policy teams. Design and deliver targeted stakeholder mapping to build and maintain key relationships with parliamentarians and government departments. Define the political engagement agenda for Lilly and prioritise topics that enable Lilly to differentiate from industry to create a unique voice.

    Policy. Lead development of evidence-based policy positions, consistent with Lilly's global policy positions and tailored to local environmental needs, including leading steering groups on national pricing negotiations (eg VPAG). Drive alignment with global public policy on key issues. Responsible for all Lilly consultation responses (government and trade association) and direct engagement to shape future health policy. Lead work on long-term planning to support future policy working.

    Trade Association Strategy – Drive trade association strategy across Northern Europe, ensuring Lilly has an industry leading voice in priority countries, equipping the GM and other leadership and personally representing Lilly at trade association meetings. Influence trade association strategy in line with Lilly and industry goals. Ensure Lilly voice is amplified on key issues to protect licence to operate.

    Communications. Accountable for Lilly UK's media strategy across corporate, product, and crisis communications, ensuring priorities are aligned to global Corporate and business unit goals. Accountable for all product communications. Act as company spokesperson and relationship lead for top tier media/journalists/outlets based in the UK. Corporate channels governance and management. Responsible for appropriate media training of senior leaders (routine and issue based).

    Crisis and Reputation Management: Key strategic advisor in the event of a business or reputation issue or crisis; with responsibility across all northern European sites.

    Advocacy. Advance Lilly's reputation in prioritised therapy area via strategic collaborations and relationships with Patient Organisations to support country innovation readiness, leading delivery against a clear and strategy and priorities. Provide governance and solutions for Lilly's partnering activities across the NE Hub and global teams working with Hub-based organisations.

    Internal Communications. Developing and delivering the Northern European Hub internal communications strategy in alignment with the local leadership team.

    Governance: Act as SME and decision maker on compliance for all Public Affairs-related activities, including consultancy for IBU/global colleagues regarding local regulations and Codes of Practice to enable international programme delivery and multi-market campaign rollouts. Responsible for function business planning and budget management, setting and driving delivery against strategic goals. Accountability for all Corporate Affairs owned procedures and job aids and identifying and driving process improvements to improve clarity and productivity and drive high standards. Materials approver for Corporate Affairs in the UK. Provide consultancy. Ensure team activities comply with local codes of practice and that Lilly upholds industry standards.

    Required Experience

  • Significant demonstrated leadership in a communications or government relations role
  • Demonstrated experience in government relations, policy and consultation working.
  • Demonstrated experience of designing and delivering integrated public affairs strategies
  • Demonstrated experience of leading media relations with international outlets
  • Demonstrated experience and success in influencing trade association strategy
  • Expertise in UK political and media processes with the ability to identify corporate affairs, product pipeline, and product issues and opportunities.
  • Proven track record of strategic internal communications/internal consultancy
  • Significant experience of working in a global organization or within a matrix organizational structure
