Key Responsibilities
- Manages team members and tax advisers to deliver tax compliance and reporting in accordance with relevant tax law and best practice across all jurisdictions in which USS operates or invests. Taxes to include, but not limited to, income taxes, corporatetaxes, operational taxes, pension taxes and VAT. Includes drafting and/or reviewing and signingoff on tax returns.
- First point of contact with HMRC.
- First point of contact for stakeholders with technical queries on corporation tax, income tax, VAT, CIS, employment and pension taxes liaising with external tax advisers where appropriate.
- Ensures that appropriate tax is applied across all USS investments, working with Operations, Investment Accounts and external custodians.
- Manages daytoday tax risk reporting for the tax function and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and risk management. Includes drafting reports for management committees and boards.
- Demonstrates a high level of understanding of the interaction between accounting records and data inputs in the production of tax outputs. Suggests improvements and drives change to ensure best practice and risk mitigation on an ongoing basis.
- Working collaboratively with broader business stakeholders and third parties. Acts as an ambassador for the Tax team, develops relationships within Finance, Operations and Pension Service Delivery team.
Your experience
- Holds a professional accounting qualification and a professional tax qualification.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
- Tax compliance experience, ideally both in practice and inhouse (in particular, preparing/reviewing corporate tax, partnership and VAT returns)
- Awareness of international tax principles and operational taxes
- Knowledge and experience of financial systems, accounting processes and controls, tax risk management
- Strong Excel skills
- A dynamic individual who can take responsibility to work independently and interact within nontax teams in Finance and across the organisation.
