    Band 8B Clinical Scientist Lead in Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR)

    An exciting opportunity is available for a senior, experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to lead the Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) section and to join our friendly and expanding Radiation Protection Department team at RBFT.

    You will work with a high degree of autonomy to lead and develop the NIR Section, and to deliver NIR physics services to RBFT.

    NIR modalities currently supported include state-of-the-art MRI, ultrasound imaging, lasers, UV & blue light phototherapy and other EMF sources. Opportunities for collaboration & research through the links with University of Reading are actively encouraged.

    Staff recruited are expected to be available to work flexibly across all our Trust locations to meet service demands.

    Applicants should be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist and certify MRSE or LPA.

    Due to the nature of the Section's service delivery a willingness to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential and the post holder should have a valid driving licence.

    Main duties of the job

    The Head of NIR Physics will direct and manage a highly specialist scientific and technical is a specialist role, with the freedom to initiate action within broad scientific principles.

    The post holder will have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of NIR modalities, with sufficient knowledge, skill and experience to act as MR Safety Expert (MRSE) or Laser Protection Adviser (LPA).

    You will provide specialist scientific support and advice to medical, clinical, scientific and technical staff on highly complex issues and the interpretation of relevant guidance related to room design, performance testing and safety information.

    If an MRSE, you will engage in the optimisation of clinical protocols and in the development of translational techniques and procedures in conjunction with clinical colleagues.

    The post holder will be expected to undertake specific research and development activities as required to improve the quality of service to patients, and keep abreast of new developments in their field. This will requires close cooperation between a multidisciplinary team to ensure that patients receive the best medical care possible.

    About us

    The Radiation Protection Department sits within the growing Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate at Royal Berkshire Hospital.

    Our role is to support the Trust and clients in ionising and non-ionising radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics. For non-ionising radiation we provide services for MR, lasers, ultrasound and blue-light and UV phototherapy.

    The section currently supports a two large NHS Trusts, two community hospitals, and various smaller establishments including 7 private hospitals and a community dental service across Berkshire.

    Across all sites there are 8 and one 3T MR systems. An extensive expansion/replacement programme is nearing completion with two new MR systems ( and 3T), providing state-of-the-art systems with substantial opportunities for service development and synergies with research programmes.

    The CQC recently rated the care provided by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as Good.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
  • MSc and preferably a PhD in non-ionising physics or medical physics (or equivalent)
  • Corporate Membership of IPEM
  • Certified LPA and or MRSE (MR Safety Expert)
  • Professional Registration

  • State registration as a Clinical Scientist (HCPC registration)
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Expert and specialist knowledge and full understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the use of non-ionising radiations in the fields of diagnostic radiology blue-light therapy, and biomedical research where appropriate
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and deep understanding of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of non-ionising radiation
  • Extensive specialist in the use of specialist physics testing equipment and complex procedures employed to measure the application, performance and safety of a wide variety of laser, MRI and ultrasound imaging and other non- ionising radiation equipment
  • Experience in interpreting different situations and judging measures required to ensure compliance in areas that relate to the legislation listed above
  • Build on experience in the use of specialist testing equipment employed to measure the safety and performance of laser equipment
  • Extensive experience in teaching and training varied groups of staff across a range of medical physics, diagnostic radiology and radiation protection subject areas and organising courses modules at regional and national level
