We have a couple of new opportunities to join our multi-disciplined team in Brighton and be responsible for the mechanical design of L3Harris products.

You will use CAD techniques to produce functional and cost effective designs, that take the product fromconcept through to production and beyond.


At L3Harris in Brighton we are part of Release Systems and the Mission Avionics sector operating in the Aerospace domain.

We specialise in high performance electro-mechanical systems and pneumatic technology for airborne weapon carriage release.


What you'll bring
The role of Mechanical Design Engineer requires the following experience and skills:

  • Mechanical Engineering qualification with demonstrable work experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
  • SolidWorks CAD and SolidWorks PDM proficient with knowledge of BS8888 and Geometric Tolerancing
  • Experience of designing products with low costs from the outset (DFMA & Design to Cost methoodologies)
  • Understanding of legislative requirement of products and product development.
  • Technical Report writing
  • Mechanical Engineering Calculations, Stress Analysis, Fluid Dynamics (FEA and CFD).
  • Understand the requirement presented in Requests for Quotation
  • RfQ, Specifications, System Requirements Documents
  • Development of innovative, well engineered conceptual solutions and design proposals, and guide other engineers,designers and daughtspersons to produce detailed CAD design layouts and manufacturing drawings.
  • Guide and inspiring other less experienced engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to resolve problems found throughout the product development life cycle to ensure the larger programme schedule are achieved.

What the role will involve
If you were to join our team of dedicated experts, the responsibilities of your role will include the following:

  • Provide the programme team with mechanical and design engineering capability.
  • Produce design schemes and proposals in response to specifications
  • Produce detailed CAD (Solid Works) design layouts (model and draft) and manufacturing drawings as well as delegating work to others in the team.
  • Choose material forming solutions suitable for the duty and quantity of components to be made
  • Check design drawings for completeness and accuracy
  • Select and source proprietary parts/components that are fit for purpose
  • Support project monthly estimating and manage own work to meet cost estimates and schedule
  • Support Investigations, solutions and write reports
  • Follow procedures to meet the requirements of ISO9001and AS9100
  • Support internal, customer and supplier meetings
  • Be prepared to assist with other engineering duties (e.g. testing, experimentation, modelling, CAD design etc) as workload may demand from time to time
  • Liaise with Production Engineering to ensure optimum choice of production methods and materials for economic manufacture
  • Comply with Quality Assurance (QA) requirements and procedures
  • Provides guidance and mechanical engineering leadership to projects and team members through mentoring and training of others in team or department.
  • Understand the product development lifecycle.
