    Successful candidates will be helping support high hazard decommissioning projects both in the UK and Worldwide, working as part of our multi-discipline team. Responsibilities for the role will be focused around those detailed below and there will be an expectation to support other team members outside this specific discipline where the need arises. Nominally, candidates will based out of the Whitehaven office, however depending on experience, candidates may be based at our Warrington, Silchester or wider office locations in the UK.

  • If some of these apply, then this role might be for you. As an Assistant Characterisation Engineer, you will provide essential resource and support to AtkinsRéalis' growing Characterisation Team. Depending on capability, knowledge and experience, you'll support a variety of tasks, such as those listed below but we'll aim to allow you to get to work on what energises you the most.

  • Development and implementation of characterisation strategies for a variety of wastes.
  • Review of waste stream characterisation data.
  • Production, management, and delivery of survey, sampling and analysis plans.
  • On site sampling and assay activities.
  • Development of analytical scopes of work.
  • Facilitating analytical work.
  • Modelling and assay data interpretation.
  • Processing, review and interpretation of analytical data.
  • Recommendation of waste classification and waste disposal routes.
  • Participation or lead of waste and characterisation related BAT and optioneering workshops.
  • Development of bids and proposals.
  • Working with a variety of projects, locations, departments and clients.
  • Working closely with clients to help solve complex and challenging problems.
  • Ownership and management of packages of work.
  • Providing innovative solutions in areas of expertise to help in the delivery of projects and to develop team capability.
  • Lead and support other team members, sharing knowledge and experience.
  • Interface with project managers to support project delivery.
  • Identification of training and professional development needs.
  • Requirements:

    The optimal candidate will have demonstrable experience in some of the following areas, however we welcome motivated and capable individuals with related experience or overlapping backgrounds.

  • Application of the characterisation process for both radioactive and non-radioactive waste materials (inclusive of DQO or other sampling plan strategies).
  • Environmental or remediation characterisation projects.
  • Development and application of radionuclide fingerprints.
  • Knowledge of radiochemical or chemical analysis; selection of methods; processing and use of analytical data.
  • Operation and interpretation of radiometric instrumentation data.
  • Development of activity assessment methodologies.
  • Usage of relevant software such as Microshield, Mercurad, Visual Sample Plan.
  • Management of radioactive waste on a nuclear licensed site.
  • Nuclear Industry Knowledge, with on-site experience at a Nuclear facility highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of both radioactive and non-radioactive waste management legislation.
  • A good understanding of the waste routing options for radioactive and non-radioactive waste (inclusive of Waste Acceptance Criteria).
  • Production of technical reporting and supporting calculations on the aforementioned topics.
  • A level of commercial awareness and ability to work within budget and program.
  • Flexible in approach and willing to travel to work on client sites.
  • Interpersonal skills, able to build and develop relationships internally and externally.
