    About our Apprenticeship

    As a Building Services Technical Apprentice you will work within a team of engineers and other professionals in the design of various installations found in buildings.

    As an apprentice you will engage with the latest digital engineering and BIM tools whilst developing a knowledge of the smart technologies and innovations which are shaping the buildings of the future.

    Buildings take on many forms from newly built facilities to the refurbishment of historic premises for every sector including healthcare (hospitals), education (schools, colleges, universities), workplace (offices), retail (shopping outlets) and leisure (hotels) both in the UK and internationally.

    During your apprenticeship at BDP no two days will ever be the same as you study.

    Spending one day a week at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and the remainder working at our Manchester studio.

    You'll study towards a Level 6 Apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering.

    Not only will you learn in the classroom, you'll also enjoy being part of our interdisciplinary team as you get involved with a wide range of projects and learn something new every day.

    Working as part of the building services team within our Manchester office, each apprentice will have opportunities to learn about mechanical, electrical and public health design as well as other areas such as acoustics, lighting and sustainability.

    The successful applicants will work as part of our design team, our current projects cover a wide range of building types such as offices, universities and schools, hospitals and laboratories historic buildings and sport and leisure facilities.

    Alongside your training at university you will be taught how to use computer modelling packages such as Revit, IES and ElectricalOM.

    Partake in internal and external training sessions and go out to visit construction sites

    Our environmental design group houses building services, mechanical, electrical, public health and infrastructure engineers, specialist lighting designers, acoustic and sustainability consultants, BREEAM assessors and building physicists.

    Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C, including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).


    BTEC Extended Diploma:
    MMM in Engineering including Maths units
    DD including Maths units
    Pass Access Course: 96 points including 15 Level 3 credits in Maths
    be competent in the use of IT with good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
    be able to communicate in written English to a good standard


    Personal Qualities:
    be creative and practical
    have a general interest in the built environment and a career in the construction industry
    Our Manchester Studio is home to an interdisciplinary team of award winning architects, engineers, designers and urbanists. The team's portfolio covers a wide range of sectors, scales, clients and building types. Recently completed projects include Oldham Town Hall redevelopment, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Victoria Station Manchester, BOXPARK Croydon.

    The BDP designed studio, situated along the Piccadilly Basin, provides large open-plan areas including a central hub space at ground floor level with views over the canal, creating an inspiring environment for meeting, thinking and creating.

    We work closely with users, clients and the community to create special places for living, working, shopping, culture and learning across Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and Australia.

    Founded in Preston in the UK in 1961, we now have studios across the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, the MENA region, India, Canada and China.
