We have an opportunity to join the Legal Support team as a Legal Assistant at our Newcastle office.

In this role you will work closely with our lawyers/claims handlers dealing with a broad variety of shipping law disputes and enquiries.

For those new to shipping law this is an opportunity to learn on the job, assisting with drafting, research and claims support tasks, with most disputes being referred to London arbitration.

This is an interesting, varied and challenging role and a great opportunity to work within the shipping industry in a friendly and supportive environment.


What will you be doing?

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the administration and conduct of claims with appropriate guidance and support from those requiring assistance.
  • Providing discrete task assistance (legal, procedural and administrative) across a high number of claims primarily involving FD&D matters including, but not limited to, drafting internal case summaries and reports, assisting with costs management and recovery, completing standard legal procedures and tasks on files, assisting in the conduct of London arbitration proceedings and as appropriate instructing external lawyers, surveyors, correspondents or experts both in the UK and abroad.
  • Assisting with discrete research tasks, legal and claimsrelated data collection, analysis and management systems.
  • Drafting documents and pleadings as may be appropriate and required.
  • Adding additional capacity and support to the FD&D lawyers and other colleagues within NorthStandard generally, as required and agreed by your line manager.

Ad Hoc Duties


Your key accountabilities will include such other duties and tasks are as allocated to you at the discretion of management and that are within your capabilities and within the scope of your post.


Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Legal knowledge and experience.
  • IT Literate with the ability to quickly adapt to new systems. Working knowledge of MS office and Worksite.
  • Efficient & effective administration skills, demonstrating an attention to detail concerning work produced.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Some knowledge of shipping law and/or the shipping industry
  • Work experience in a paralegal role or similar
