Description
We are recruiting for a Senior Support Worker to join our new In the Community Wellbeing programme in Orkney.


Working in partnership with Scottish Families Grow Your Own Routes programme, we will support young people aged 12-26 years across the Orkney mainland and Orkney Isles who have been affected by others alcohol and drug use.

We will ensure that the right support is in place at the right time offering a flexible and person-centred approach.

The Senior Support Worker will lead, develop and deliver the project with the support of partner organisations and the Service Manager.

You will also lead a team of Support Workers as well as provide support to young people on a 1-1 and group basis.


You will manage your own time and your diary to reflect the needs of the people that you are supporting.

Working 35 hours per week, these hours are mainly worked Monday to Friday, with the flexibility to work occasional hours on at the weekend if required, flexibility is also required to respond to situations at short notice as and when required.


Duties of the position will include:

  • To lead, develop and deliver Grow Your Own Routes Project, with the assistance and support of partner organisations and the Service Manager.
  • To line manage the Grow Your Own service team including provision of support and supervision, annual appraisals, and team meetings.
  • To identify, engage and work alongside local young people in Orkney to develop a codesigned programme of support for 1226yearolds affected by family/other people's alcohol and drug use.
  • To support young people, on a one to one or group basis, to develop coping skills and strategies and provide advice and guidance to help reduce the negative impact that others substance use may have on them. This will include face to face, telephone and online support, using a flexible approach so that young people receive support whenever it is best for them, including evenings and weekends.
  • To work closely with local stakeholders, service providers and commissioners, including the establishment of twoway signposting and referral pathways, and the promotion of a familyinclusive recovery agenda.
  • To actively promote family recovery and family inclusive practice and facilitate opportunities for young people to come together including through 'safe space' peer groups and Whole Family activities.
  • To participate in local forums to ensure to ensure the views of young people and their families are represented.

We'd love you to be qualified or willing to work towards a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above, for example SVQ 3 Social Services (Children and Young People) or relevant HNC or equivalent and (PDA) in Health and Social Care Supervision at SCQF level 7.


We also need you to have gained experience of leading and supporting a staff team, as well as having gained experience of working with children, young people and families.

A full driving license and access to a car for work purposes is essential.


What you can expect from us

  • The post holder will report to the Service Manager
  • Your normal working hours are 35 per week.
  • Your usual place of work will be Dunkirk, Shore Street, Kirkwall, Orkney, KW15 1LG.
  • You are also required to work in the local community, and you will be paid travel expenses between your usual place of work and appointments undertaken in the course of your duties.
  • Alternatively, you may also choose to work remotely from your home address where appropriate. Working arrangements must be agreed with your line manager, based on the needs of the service.
  • Annual leave entitlement of 210 hours holiday (equivalent to 6 weeks) pro rata per year in the first year rising to 280 hours (equivalent to 8 weeks) pro rata per year in the second. This includes public holidays
