This is a secondment vacancy - for the financial year 2023/24

We are looking for an experienced safety professional to lead our team through the next 12 months.

The Head of Patient Safety will monitor and maintain the highest standards across the Trust. The HoPS will develop effective working relationships internally & externally; with healthcare regulators (eg Care Quality Commission, regional & national networks, other Ambulance Services & other local healthcare organisations.

The HoPS will work with national Patient Safety groups & experts to ensure continuity, that Trust Patient Safety practices & procedures are aligned to national guidelines.


The HoPS is an ambassador providing advance theory & practical knowledge in developing a safety culture, through managing Patient Safety standards & assurance using improvement methodology to learn lessons, identification of trends and themes and achieve sustainable change.


Working proactively in partnership with the executive leadership team, operational top teams, clinical leads and selected external stakeholders to ensure Patient Safety arrangements are in place across the Trust; demonstrating political astuteness and an ability to manage priorities with competing deadlines.


The post holder will be a point of escalation by the Patient Safety team in managing challenging and sometimes highly complex, emotional staff or patients.

This can include managing a small caseload of very complex cases, working with families and staff involved. There will be continued exposure to potentially distressing information including learning from deaths.

.The post holder will be producing detailed reports on a regular basis with strong data analytical skills.


The post holder will be delivering training (including large groups) routinely across the Trust which may include travelling throughout the region.


The post holder will be attending meetings with an appropriate level of autonomy, responsible for delivering complex, extremely sensitive information.

The post holder will be responsible for the Leadership of the Patient Safety team.


The Patient Safety team is a growing regional team benefiting from wide expertise in different areas with some members undertaking a split role and so undertaking operational duties weekly alongside their Patient Safety Specialist role.

A mix of office and home working is available to all team members.

  • Provide leadership, expert advice and resource on Patient Safety improvement methodology and delivery
  • To manage the systems processes that support Patient Safety management ensuring compliance with external and legal requirements.
  • To manage the commissioning, management of internal and external investigations providing support and advice to facilitate their timely completion and maximise the opportunities to learn.
  • To work with the services to ensure that action plans derived from the management of the incident investigation are developed with a high level of efficacy.
  • Ensure that Patient Safety is fully integrated with all relevant Trust programmes and initiatives.
  • Champion and promote quality as a key focus within the Trust and across the health system to improve clinical productivity and effectiveness.
