Job description:


We are committed to investing in the country's infrastructure to improve productivity, level up our regions and provide low carbon transport.

The Department for Transport sponsors the development and delivery of High Speed 2 (HS2) - the country's largest project, delivering benefits now and for future generations.


This role sits in the HS2 Delivery Directorate within the Department for Transport's High Speed Rail Group, responsible for overseeing delivery of the route between Crewe and London.

This includes the construction of Old Oak Common Station (OOC), the largest station ever built in the UK as a single project.

There are two core strands to this role.

First, you will provide strategic oversight across the Old Oak Common programme, monitoring cost, schedule and performance by HS2 Ltd and its suppliers.

Second, you will have an active sponsor role for several packages of work within the delivery programme.

You will work closely with:

Old Oak Common Station Sponsor, HS2 Ltd, the Government-owned Company delivering HS2; independent experts providing assurance and advice on HS2 Ltd delivery; and colleagues across the Department.

You will review and challenge Management Information and reporting received from HS2 Ltd, identify emerging risks and issues and the steps required to enable the Department to address emerging issues proactively and in a manner that protects value-for-money and timely delivery of HS2.

Roles and Responsibilities

_ Some of your key duties and responsibilities will be to:_

  • Monitor delivery of OOC station against its agreed scope, schedule and target cost, including progress reporting and management of risks and opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Project Sponsors (stations, construction, etc.) to ensure that there is a robust and reliable schedule for the project and that interfaces between OOC station and other elements of phase 1 construction are clearly identified and well managed.
  • Actively sponsor packages of construction work across the station, making valuable recommendations that actively manage risks and opportunities to drive project performance and helps to develop a complete and accurate picture thet will inform strategic decisions regarding the management, quality and control of the project.

Person specification:


We are looking for a highly motivated team player who is able to quickly get to grips with large amounts of information.

You will be comfortable operating with a high level of autonomy and be able to build and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

We require you to be able to interpret project Management Information, tracking trends over time and providing additional insight.


You will excel in both verbal and written communication, with the ability to adapt your delivery to suit a wide variety of audiences, maximising both impact and understanding.


You will have outstanding organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple and often conflicting priorities to time and of a high standard.


You are not afraid to challenge and push back to colleagues and stakeholders where necessary in managing their expectations and navigating the right programme outcomes.


Further information:


You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary.

If based in Leeds or Birmingham, occasional travel to our London office will be required for key meetings and team events.

You may also be required to make occasional trips to sites in order to support your knowledge of the wider HS2 programme.
