    Job overview

    We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the department of microbiology as an Associate Practitioner. As an Associate Practitioner you will have a key role in helping to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Microbiology department. You will work closely with the Biomedical Scientist staff to provide rapid, timely and high quality results for the department.

    The work will involve undertaking a range of manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations, using a variety of analytical techniques to facilitate the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients. Successful applicants will be required to use, calibrate, troubleshoot and quality control a range of specialist laboratory equipment and automated technology, including rapid diagnostics technology and they will be trained to assist with the running of molecular diagnostic assays, the reading of chromogenic screening bench cultures and routine mycology bench cultures and help with the identification of pathogens using Maldi-tof and the investigation of samples for mycobacteria.

    Main duties of the job

    The main duty of the Associate Practitioner will be to undertake, on a daily basis manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations using a variety of analytical techniques under supervision for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

    To contribute to providing a professional laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.

    To liaise with the senior laboratory staff and laboratory medical staff to ensure safe, rapid, timely, processing of samples and accurate reporting of results.

    To take the lead in the preparation and processing and analysis of clinical specimens under the direct supervision of band 6 and band 7 staff.

    To help to manage, coordinate, roster and supervise a team of band 2 and 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant staff working in the laboratory on a daily basis.

    The main base for this position will be in the Royal London microbiology hub laboratory. Working across the Pathology Partnership laboratory sites may be required in line with the needs and requirements of the Pathology Partnership service.

    The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

    The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

    Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

    The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.     Essential criteria

  • Level 4 Science Qualification (BSc, HNC/HND or foundation degree, BTEC in a science area or equivalent) and/or evidence of commenced progress with the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I and Part II.

  • Extensive work experience of working in a diagnostic Pathology laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Assistant.
  • Experience of working in a diagnostic microbiology lab.
  • Experience of using a laboratory computer system.
  • Experience of using complex laboratory equipment and automated technology.
  • Experience of handling high risk pathology samples.
  • Experience of training staff.
