  • As part of the Environment Agency, you will have the opportunity to help create a better place for people, wildlife, and the environment.

We are currently looking for a Senior Assistant Scientist to support National Monitoring in a key area of growth - our Organic Chemistry Screening service.

As a Senior Assistant Scientist you'll be expected to supervise the delivery of this analytical service to defined time, cost, and quality targets.

Working alongside a small group of skilled analysts, you will take responsibility for a wide range of tasks that will enable the team to successfully analyse and process samples.

You will act as a technical lead for sample preparation and data handling, as well as having a sound knowledge of instrument maintenance and the software packages that support our processes.

You will support our senior staff in the supervision of others to ensure that our screens service continues to be a productive, efficient, and positive area to work.


  • The team
  • You will be part of the National Monitoring
  • Monitoring Laboratories, providing analytical services to both the Environment Agency and a variety of external customers. Our Organic Chemistry team at Starcross currently comprises of 23 staff members, and is responsible for a wide range of organic analytical methods that are essential in supporting the Environment Agency's aims and objectives.


  • Experience/skills required

  • This post will be based in our Organic Screening area, therefore an excellent working knowledge and experience in LCMS or GCMS screening techniques is desirable.
'Hands on' experience in the operation of QTOF systems is also desirable.

You will be able to demonstrate your technical knowledge that will enable you to supervise and lead others within the team through training and mentoring.

You must enjoy working in a busy environment, sometimes under pressure to achieve results.

You are or have been working towards becoming a Registered Scientist with the Institute of Science and Technology (or similar) as part of your personal development and can show evidence of your continuous professional development in your time with the Environment Agency.
