Description
Severfield is the market leader in structural steel, recognised for its iconic structures and engineering excellence.

Involved in the UK's highest profile building projects, we have the design and engineering capabilities to deliver the UK's largest, most complex projects.

Acting on behalf of our clients, our project portfolio includes varied sports stadia, innovative bridges, national infrastructure, as well as shaping city skylines across the UK and further afield.

A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for a Pre-Construction Assistant to join our Commercial and Industrial division, based at one of our offices either in Lostock, Dalton, or London.

This is a trainee position based in our Sales and Estimating department, however you will work across the disciplines involved in the Pre-Construction function of Severfield, such as Commercial, Design, Construction, Sustainability, Business Development and Proposals Management.

You will also undertake a Level 3 qualification as a Construction Support Technician, and after completion of this and the experience you have gained, this will give the opportunity to develop in a particular function.

Key tasks, responsibilities and learning objectives are broken down into the different functions:

Commercial

  • Understanding client requirements, and how they impact the Severfield business in terms of costs and risks.
  • Measuring raw material quantities from 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Understanding and pricing fabrication content for different structural components across different production facilities
  • Understanding and pricing a range of different surface treatment (paint) requirements
  • Assessing requirements for products outside of Severfield's inhouse capabilities (i.e., boughtout items), and obtaining prices from our supply chain partners.

Design

  • Learning about the different types of design that the Severfield business undertakes, the risks involved with each, and the design software / methodologies we use
  • Undertake basic design calculations to gain an appreciation of engineering judgement in Pre-Construction
  • Undertake 'Fire Engineering' calculations, to aid the Estimating team in pricing fireprotective paint systems as accurately as possible.
  • Gain an appreciation for 'Value Engineering' and where Severfield can offer our client's alternative approaches which can save money, time, or embodied carbon.

Construction

  • Work with the construction team to understand how delivery programmes (i.e. how long it will take us to build a structure onsite) and our costs are calculated at tender stage
  • Understand the different plant requirements for erecting different types of structures (cranes and access machinery)

Sustainability

  • Gain an understanding of the sustainability impacts of the structural steelwork industry, and how we can reduce our impact as a business
  • Undertake 'embodied carbon' calculations on individual projects, understanding how different procurement routes can impact our carbon levels
  • Advise the commercial team on possible value engineering solutions to reduce carbon impact

Business Development

  • Gain an understanding of the tender process, and Severfield's place at every stage.

Proposals Management

  • Assist with the compilation of proposals documents, PowerPoint presentations, and supporting information for submission to clients.

In return, Severfield offers a competitive salary and benefits package, the opportunity for you to feel valued and empowered at work, as well as knowing that you are employed by the UK's market leader in structural steel.

We are an Equal Opportunities employer and actively encourage people from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets to join us.

We are keen to hear from all applicants regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, religion or faith.
