We require a Laboratory Assistant to join our busy, friendly team.


The post will involve supporting the department in providing diagnostic services and includes specimen data entry, assisting the medical team during specimen dissection, specimen preparation, machine operation, dealing with telephone enquiries; stock control; and laboratory waste disposal.


The successful applicant must be conscientious and enthusiastic and able to work well as part of a team and under pressure.

The successful applicant must also have good communication and IT skills.

Relevant experience would be an advantage but full training will be provided.


The Department provides high quality, value for money pathology services to UHSx and other Trusts including teaching and district general hospitals, and GP commissioners, forging closer customer relationships along with developing new commercial opportunities.

The Cellular Pathology Department consists of the Histology and Cytology laboratories, mortuary and bereavement. Histology undertakes all aspects of routine work and has a large immunohistochemistry area and electron microscopy department. Cytology operates a diagnostic service including ROSE and EBUS clinics. In addition the department also operates a semen analysis service and joint fluid assessment for the presence of crystals.

There are mortuary and bereavement offices located at Royal Sussex County and Princess Royal hospitals.


This position will be based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, working and the post-holder will be held accountable to the HR policies and procedures of UHSx.

Scientific & analytical

  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures at all times
  • Participate in data entry for cellular pathology samples.
  • Undertakes routine maintenance and troubleshooting on complex equipment to ensure correct functioning
  • Checks samples before processing for identification, status and suitability for diagnostic investigations, referring to a BMS when necessary.
  • Prepares reagents, stock solutions and laboratory disinfectants as directed.
  • Help maintain the filing system of slides and blocks.
  • Under supervision, performs preparation techniques on all sample types ensuring optimal preparation of samples
  • Performs preparation techniques required for special and immunohistochemical staining.
  • Assist the Consultant Pathologists or BMS at the specimen dissection bench, recording details and check specimen details.
  • Cleans and disinfects equipment and work areas as appropriate
  • Suggests changes to protocols/ Policies where appropriate.
Diagnostic & interpretive

  • Understands the urgency of requests; prioritising work according to SOP's.
  • Prepare specimens, making decisions from a range of options on the type of process to be used e.g. fixation, wet preparations, referral to another area of Pathology if appropriate.
  • Reports anomalies to senior staff according to SOP's.
  • Is aware of and works within own technical competence
Information management & technology

  • Works within SOPs and policies to ensure high quality data, thus maintaining the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases. Recognises data quality problems and brings to the attention of senior staff.
  • Attends training on the use of display screen equipment and ensures that working practices comply.
  • Reports any non-functional hardware to senior staff.
  • Uses the laboratory information management system according to authorised protoco
