We work as a national practice providing advice and support in all aspects of Indirect Tax (VAT, Customs Duty, Green taxes) to a broad range of business sectors including large multi-nationals, household name retailers and public sector organisations.

The role in question is with the Trade & Customs team.


The Team - Trade & Customs


KPMG has a large team of Trade & Customs specialists located across the UK, working to support our national portfolio of clients with a variety of Trade & Customs issues.

Within the team we have specialists in areas such as valuation, classification, origin and customs special and simplified procedures.

We work closely with our colleagues both in Indirect Tax, other areas such as Transfer Pricing, and the wider Advisory business in order to deliver value to KPMG's clients.

We offer a wide range of services including customs advisory, post-Brexit assurance testing, compliance reviews, training support, supply chain restructuring and technology solutions.

The world of Trade and Customs is continually changing, and our role is to evolve with it to help our clients succeed.


Roles and Responsibilities


As a key member of our team you will be required to work alongside our National Markets team to accelerate the growth of our business.


Specifically, key aspects will be to:

  • Provide high quality customs and international trade advice for clients in line with UK legislation, HMRC guidance, and other local tax jurisdiction rules (where appropriate with support from KPMG member firms)
  • Lead business development and marketing initiatives and pitch for work with both new and existing clients, potentially both domestically and internationally.
  • Develop innovative solutions for our clients which includes identifying Customs Duty risks, solutions and opportunities
  • Build an internal network within the wider tax and advisory practices of our firm
  • Be confident interacting at the most senior levels internally and externally, while at the same time able to interact well with peers and coach other more junior members of the team.
  • Positive and enthusiastic manner in dealing with a cross section of people.
  • Strong resilience to enable flexibility in approach and ability to work under pressure.
  • Effective networker with ability to understand client needs

Experience and Skills

You should be someone who:
- has a significant relevant Trade and Customs experience which includes, customs classification, valuation, origin and customs special procedures such as customs warehousing and inward processing
- can demonstrate practical experience and an understanding of UK Customs law, the Northern Irish Protocol and a pragmatic approach to current supply chain issues between the UK and EU
- has a high level of drive and enthusiasm with a positive attitude and willingness to keep up to date technically
- has an appreciation of and/or understanding of ethical/risk issues within a client service environment
- identifies and pursues business opportunities and demonstrates sound judgement, including the ability to identify and evaluate risk issues and know when to involve others
- communicates with impact, in a way that is open, honest, consistent and clear and has the ability to communicate in writing in a clear and concise manner
- has strong analytical skills and a commercial approach to resolving issues and providing advice
- has very strong people skills for engaging with our clients and team members
- is willing to coach less experienced staff. Gives clear direction and can provide positive, constructive feedback
- takes personal responsibility and accountability for their work
