    Job summary

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 x 12 month fixed term posts as a Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team working across two sites at the University Hospital of Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich.

    Main duties of the job

  • Participate in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient Anaesthetic service, and with the proper functioning of the Anaesthetic Department. This will include some flexibility of fixed commitments.
  • Participate in the anaesthetic consultant on call rota
  • Be prepared to work on both sites of the Trust. Although on call duties will be undertaken solely at one of the two sites, some elective theatre sessions do occur cross site when necessary.
  • Assist when required in the provision of Critical Care services.
  • Participate in the professional supervision, management, support and teaching of Anaesthetic trainees.
  • Organise and participate in teaching sessions for undergraduate students and post-graduate medical staff and other health professionals.
  • Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of the department
  • Comply with the Trust's Clinical Governance processes as stipulated by the Divisional and Medical Directors
  • The post holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust's activities.
  • Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice
  • Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, and meet the requirements for revalidation
  • Demonstrate willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level

    Prime responsibility/ Key tasks:

    To work in the Trust's team of Anaesthetic Consultants and Intensivists to provide elective and emergency Anaesthetic care

    Accountable to:

    Chef Medical Officer - (Dr. Vanessa Purday)

    Reports to:

    Surgery & Cancer Divisional Medical Director (Dr. Waqas Khaliq)

    Clinical Director for Anaesthesia & Pain (Dr. Beenu Madhavan)

    Works with:

    Consultants and Senior Doctors in the Anaesthetic Department, across both sites.

    Other Consultant colleagues in the Trust and the Senior Management of the hospital.

    Key tasks:

    To maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients under your care

    To join colleagues in the smooth running of Anaesthetic services in our Trust

    To participate in teaching, audit, management and clinical governance

    Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD)

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration for Anaesthesia; (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Desirable

  • Higher degree or qualification such as MSc or PhD
  • Clinical Skills & Experience

    Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of adult, maternity and paediatric patients
  • ALS, ATLS provider
  • Desirable

  • Evidence of extended period of additional subspecialty training in a tertiary centre
  • Broad experience of working within the NHS
  • Teaching Experience

    Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training of undergraduates, medical and allied health professionals
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to anaesthetic trainees of all levels, and achieving GMC standards to be recognised as a clinical supervisor
  • Desirable

  • Evidence of formal experience in medical education including regional/national teaching Higher teaching qualification
  • An understanding of current issues in medical education and training
  • Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as an educational supervisor
  • Formal educational qualification
  • ALS/ATLS instructor, and PALS or APLS provider or instructor

  • Evidence of involvement and /or experience in risk processes such as Serious Incident reviews and patient safety systems
