    Why join Marshall in this role?The Hydrogen Fuel System Lead Architect at Marshall plays a pivotal role in the innovation and development of advanced fuel system architectures for next- aircraft.

    This position leads the definition, refinement, and validation of fuel system architectures including requirement management and the development of innovative approaches to design and verification processes.

    Within this context, the purpose of the Lead Architect is to:

    Provide leadership, management and technical oversight on the design, development, and testing of a scalable and modular liquid hydrogen fuel system, initially through to ground demonstration at TRL 6 in 2027.

    Coordinate with various teams across the project collaboration, including engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance, to ensure that the fuel system elements satisfy performance, safety, and applicable regulatory standards.

    Address issues that arise during the design and verification phases, apply thorough systems engineering practises to make informed design and project decisions.


    The responsibilities in this role include:
    Implement and ensure compliance with Lifecycle Management and Engineering processes within Marshall Futureworx hydrogen industrial research context. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to the hydrogen fuel system.

    Lead the development of advanced fuel system architectures for next- aircraft, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and integration with other aircraft systems.

    Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of fuel system components within the overall aircraft architecture.

    Collaborate closely with engineering teams, stakeholders, and external partners to gather inputs, assess feasibility, and refine fuel system architecture designs.

    Facilitate workshops and design reviews to ensure alignment with project objectives and stakeholder expectations. Define clear and comprehensive fuel system requirements based on project objectives, regulatory standards, and stakeholder inputs. Refine requirements iteratively based on feedback, technical constraints, and evolving project needs to ensure accuracy and completeness. Develop innovative approaches to fuel system design, emphasizing modularity, scalability, and adaptability to accommodate diverse aircraft platforms. Utilize model-based systems engineering (MBSE) practices to create detailed system models, ensuring alignment with defined requirements and project goals. Establish robust validation and verification procedures to ensure the functionality, reliability, and safety of the fuel system architecture. Implement comprehensive testing protocols and simulations to validate system behaviour and performance against defined requirements. Ensure that the fuel system architecture adheres to relevant industry regulations, safety standards, and certification requirements.

    Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry partners to contribute to the development of new standards, ensuring compliance with emerging industry norms.

    Collaborate with the project team and support functions to monitor project progress, track milestones, and address any deviations from the project plan.

    Proactively identify potential challenges and deviations, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure timely and successful project completion. Facilitate knowledge retention and dissemination strategies. Capture, organize, and preserve knowledge, insights, and best practices related to the hydrogen fuel system.

    Perform effective risk management activities to identify and mitigate potential risks, opportunities, or vulnerabilities in the fuel system's design or operation.

    Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the fuel system architecture. Roadmap the remaining Technology Readiness Levels (TRL6-TRL9) for the fuel system.


    Key tasks include:
    Establish and lead the implementation model-based systems engineering (MBSE) practices to develop requirements-led modelling and simulation capability. Ensure simulations are of sufficient fidelity to measurably de-risk design decisions. Utilize MBSE tools to create dynamic models that allow for iterative testing and refinement of the fuel system design. Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders to clearly communicate project status, milestones, and outcomes. Effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring a clear understanding of project developments and challenges. Analyse data in collaboration with simulation and testing teams to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in the resulting performance.

    Working closely with the simulation and testing teams manage any issues or anomaly resolution identified during testing, ensuring optimal performance of the fuel system.


    Apply if you have most of the following:

    Degree level or equivalent in a STEM or adjacent discipline Expertise in model-based systems engineering tools and practices, with proficiency in relevant computer/software packages, to support low risk design development and validation.

    Including or equivalent to IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management tools [DOORS NEXT, Workflow and Test management and Rhapsody], MATLAB, Simulink and Simscape, Siemens Capital software.

    Experience in systems engineering, with a focus on fuel system architecture development for aerospace applications. Proven experience in leading cross-functional teams and defining complex system requirements. Experience in liquid hydrogen handling highly desired. Experience in relevant technology development [TRL3-6] project environments highly desired Applied experience in developing new supply chains desirable. Strong project and risk management skills. Experience in manufacturing of mock-ups and prototypes.
