JOB OVERVIEW


Durham University International Study Centre (DUISC) are seeking a Head of Student Support to be a member of the Student Experience and Centre Leadership Team with accountability for all Student Welfare, well-being, and student support services, including acting as the Centre Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) (an indicative list of areas and themes is provided below for illustration, but this is not intended to be an exhaustive list).

The post holder will report to the Deputy Centre Director (Student Experience). You will play a vital role in achieving the delivery of the best possible student experience.


You will lead and oversee the full range of activities undertaken by the Student Support team including (but not limited to): policies and procedures, recording and use of data, and enhancement of support activities, including student welfare, student support services and Centre coordination.

This post oversees the planning and implementation of student induction and arrival periods.


In addition, the post holder will be a key member of the Centre Safeguarding Team acting as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) taking lead responsibility for safeguarding, child protection (including online safety) and Preventing radicalisation.


The DSL is responsible for the implementation of policies to ensure compliance with safeguarding legislation (including staff recruitment and safeguarding training) as well as being available to discuss safeguarding concerns within and outside normal working hours.

The DSL is responsible for completing risk assessments and ensuring appropriate records are maintained in addition to liaising closely with other services such as local authorities, local authority designated officers (LADO) and where necessary other relevant agencies (e.g., the University of Accommodation services, the police etc.).

It is the responsibility of the designated safeguarding lead to consider whether children are at risk and implement early intervention (where appropriate), as well as support college staff to carry out safeguarding duties and advise on appropriate responses to safeguarding concerns.


ABOUT THE ROLE


The role is a senior one within the Student Experience Team and therefore has a strategic as well as an operational focus.

  • Student Support Services (including Student Support Helpdesk)
  • Accommodation and Arrival Services
  • Student Induction
  • Centre Coordination

  • Lead and motivate the Student Support Team to ensure the best possible student outcomes and student experience.
  • Contribute to developing, communicating, and enacting the strategy and priorities for the centre.

  • Implement the appropriate quality assurance and enhancement processes to ensure the maintenance of educational oversight with the UK QAA.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient maintenance of all quality and enhancementrelated policies, procedures, work instructions and documents.

_ Student Welfare and Wellbeing Services including DSL role:

  • To act as DSL, working closely with the Centre Safeguarding Team on the management and oversight of all safeguarding-related tasks, policies and procedures, safeguarding compliance, and strategies to ensure the safety of all students.
  • To guide the Student Support Team in providing a comprehensive support service to our students that guarantees successful progression to Durham University and ensures that our students are prepared to succeed in their university studies and beyond.

ABOUT YOU

  • Educated to degree level with current Advanced Safeguarding qualifications or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate a team.
  • Demonstrate strong and confident IT skills including MS Office and MS Excel and experience of working with databases.
  • To have an indepth understanding and awareness of the procedures and policies associated with the management of good wellbeing and safeguarding including Keeping Children Safe in Education, The Prevent Duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (the CTSA 2015), Human Rights Act , the Equality Act 201022, (including the Public Sector Equality Duty23), and local multiagency safeguarding arrangements.
  • Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures to support the welfare of students and ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education)
  • Ability to undertake the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Experience in providing welfare, emotional and pastoral care to students.
