    Submarine Crewing Support Specialist

    Remote with occasion travel to Abbey Wood, Bristol

    £40k - £50k p/a (FTE)

    Part-time / Fixed Term Contract

    Thorn SDS is a niche Managed Service Provider, based in Alton, Hampshire, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors.

    We are currently recruiting for Part-time Submarine Crewing Support Specialist to work on a Central Government project, on a remote basis with occasional travel to Abbey Wood, Bristol. The expectation for this role would be 60% full-time equivalent (2-3 days p/w) and would be a Fixed Term Contract for approximately 11 months.

    As the Submarine Crewing Support Specialist, you will provide crucial support to the SSNA Strategic Capability Support Programme. This role involves working collaboratively with stakeholders to mature the Crewing Solution for the SSNA project. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing and developing critical documents such as the Basic Crewing Requirement (BCR) and Watch & Station Bill (W&SB), ensuring alignment with evolving platform design and technology. The core work will be understanding the impact that technology and the evolving platform design will have on crewing and ensuring this is managed, or driven, as required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Supporting the development and management of BCR and W&SB documents.
    • Assessing crewing change impacts and representing crewing standpoint at technical discussions.
    • Identifying potential decision points influenced by crewing perspective and providing risk mitigation actions.
    • Providing technical recommendations from a crewing perspective.
    • Contributing towards quarterly risk register and scheduling review and update.
    • Engaging with stakeholders to understand design impact and translating it into crewing policy.

    Requirements:

    • Experience and understanding of Royal Navy Submarine crewing, crew allocation, branch structure, watch makeup, and crew career progression.
    • RN Submarine engineering experience.
    • Ability to engage with levels within the design team and RN command structure.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Proficient in remote working technologies.
    • Previous experience as RN SSN Executive Officer (XO) or Weapons Engineering Officer (WEO) would be preferable.
