Overview:
Marine Directorate is the lead marine management organisation in Scotland.

It was established in April 2009 as a Directorate of the Scottish Government (SG), to integrate core marine functions involving scientific research, compliance monitoring, policy and management of Scotland's seas.

We are seeking fill a Motorman position on one of our Marine Directorate Compliance or Science vessels. If you can demonstrate the relevant practical experience, then this opportunity may be of interest to you.


As the Motorman, You could be based onboard any of the Marine Scotland Compliance or Science vessels where you will be part of the Engine room team and responsible for the efficient running of the engine room and machinery space.

Motormen will follow company safety procedures, collaborate effectively with other crew members, and participate in training to stay updated on new technologies and procedures.

Your work ensures the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the vessel's machinery and systems.

You will follow a marine working pattern which in general is 3 weeks on/off. The vessels work mainly in Scottish waters using Aberdeen and the Glasgow area as their turn around locations.


The Marine Research Vessels' main function is to ensure efficient and effective provision at sea to support the work of the scientific programme within Marine Scotland.

Information gathered on research cruises is essential to the success of the scientific programme.


The Marine Patrol Vessels are involved in monitoring compliance with International, UK and National rules and regulations of licensed activities in the marine environment around Scotland and out to 200 miles and beyond when required.

This includes enforcing UK, International fisheries laws and regulations.

This is intended to assist the conservation of fish stocks and in creating the conditions necessary for the existence of a modern and sustainable sea fishing industry.


The marine research vessels are - MRV Alba Na Mara and MRV Scotia and are 27 metres and 69 metres in length respectively.


Responsibilities:


  • Carrying out engine room maintenance and cleaning as required by Second Engineer.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the machinery spaces, containing oil spills and managing drip trays.
  • Monitoring and maintaining liquid levels of all main and auxiliary equipment in conjunction with duty engineer
  • Assist with bunkering and waste oil discharge operations.
  • Arrange for the collection and processing of machinery space garbage.
  • Operate vessel incinerator (where fitted) and inform Second Engineer of quantity incinerated.
- "Lamping up" as required by Chief or Second Engineer and assisting with engineering stores.

Essential Criteria & Qualifications:

  • Engine Room Watch Rating Certificate of Competency
  • Valid STCW qualifications


  • Valid ENG

  • Security Duties Certificate

Essential Criteria:


  • Experience of working onboard a vessel in an Engineroom as a motorman.
  • Have a good understanding in all aspects of Engineroom cleanliness/maintenance.
  • Awareness of the safe working practices required for working onboard vessels and in an Engineroom.
  • Experience of operating workshop equipment safely, keeping good records and reporting findings.

You will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of three years unless successful at gaining promotion to a higher Band or Grade.
