    Job summary

    We are ideally looking for a trainee in the early years of their registrar training who can develop their orthopaedic career within this busy, progressive orthopaedic department.

    The successful applicant's duties will include assisting in operating lists, outpatient clinics (elective and fracture) and ward rounds, with responsibilities for the patients on the wards. The post holder is also responsible for the supervision of junior doctors in their day-to-day duties.

    Main duties of the job

    The post holder will be working closely with consultants and senior clinicians in theatres, assisting in major and minor procedures of both elective and trauma operating and doing some procedures under supervision. Post holder will attend fracture and elective orthopaedic clinics with consultants, do regular ward rounds of inpatients. The successful applicant would be expected to participate in a 1-in-8 non-resident 24 hour on call rota. This will be second on call for trauma and Orthopaedic managing orthopaedic emergencies under consultant supervision. There is ample opportunity for post holder to get involved in research projects and audits in the department. Post holder will be expected to attend and present in clinical governance meetings and trauma MDT meetings. There is an active weekly departmental training and teaching schedule which post holder is expected to attend.

    Post holder also accepts that they will also perform duties on occasions in unforeseen circumstances in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

    Successful applicant will be mainly based at St Richard hospital but required to travel to other sites in the Trust if needed.

    This post is a middle grade in Trauma and Orthopaedic with opportunity to gain training and experience in both trauma and elective orthopaedics.

    The department has a good spread of sub-specialities of trauma and orthopaedics including hip and knee arthroplasty, shoulders, hand, and wrist as well as foot and ankle.

    Post ideally is suited for candidate who would like to pursue career in trauma and orthopaedics.

    The post holder has good opportunity for enhancing clinical skills in patient examination and developing operative skills in trauma and orthopaedics.

    There is an active departmental weekly teaching programme in place which will enable candidates to prepare for further postgraduate examinations. Encouragement is given to do research and audits and to improve further understanding of clinical governance in NHS.
