Requirements:

  • You are nimble:
  • You can ship value at startup speed.
  • You break large problems into increments, shortening feedback loops, failing fast where necessary, and getting value into the field as quickly as possible, while taking into account the technical and business goals and constraints.
  • You have an excellent technical ability:
  • You design elegant systems to solve business problems at the right level of complexity, intelligibility, and maintainability given the constraints at hand.
  • You can deliver current needs with an eye on how a system may evolve; neither overengineering the present nor painting yourself into a corner for the future.
  • You think deeply about the problem and its solution so that you know the consequences of the choices you make in designing a solution.
  • You can jump into a new codebase to fix a bug or help to design a new approach.
  • You set high standards for solution quality in your team and make sure that those standards are upheld.
  • You are curious:
  • You are curious about new techniques, tools, and problems, and maintain an open mind about them.
  • You choose the appropriate tools, and are happy to try new tools and approaches to reach your goals. While new technologies and tools excite you, you are not attached to them if there is a better way to reach a business goal.
  • You are always learning and are not afraid to explore outside your comfort zone.
  • You lead and support your team:
  • You mentor other team members, helping them to become the best engineers they can be in a psychologically safe environment.
  • You communicate problems, solutions, and ideas succinctly and effectively, both through writing and presentations, helping everyone to gain clarity on them.
  • You design ways of working which best suit your team's goals, adapting to them as they change or as you discover what works and what doesn't.
  • You identify the strengths and weaknesses of team members and help them increase their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses through timely, constructive feedback.
If this excites you, here are some other things that might indicate this is the right position for you (don't worry if you don't have all of them):

  • 5+ years as a professional software engineer;
  • 3+ years in leadership positions (e.g. team lead, technical lead, project lead);
  • Demonstrable expertise building complex, dataintensive systems in more than one role;
  • Demonstrable professional expertise in both imperative/objectoriented and functional paradigms and multiple programming languages;
