National Highways, formerly Highways England, have named Amey Consulting as a Design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme that National Highways have ever launched.

The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables National Highways to procure Design and Construction services across the Strategic Road Network for the next 6 years.


Our Structures Design Team Leaders play an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team and alongside our client, National Highways.

As a Structures Design Team Leader, you will provide support and assistance to your Highways and Designated Funds Manager and take line management responsibility for a team of 5-6 highways designers, whilst overseeing multiple highways schemes.


You may have experience mentoring junior members of your team and looking for progression, or be an experienced line manager; either way, we will support you in broadening your experience whilst working towards a Principal level role.

You will be responsible for:


  • Drive effective health and safety practices within your team
  • Liaise with the Client and our Community partners to ensure solutions that are developed are suitable for buildability and maintainability
  • Lead on the delivery of scheme design, as well as providing support to the Design Team Leader within the design team on various design duties including:
  • Surveys/Inspections
  • Feasibility and other technical reports
  • Planning, programming and cost estimation
  • Design production
  • Production of design schedules
  • Reviewing and amending design drawings
  • Production of Specifications
  • Supporting development of Graduate Engineers and Technicians
  • Work to programme to deliver specified designs on time
  • Prepare technical reports (e.g. Feasibility/Options Reports, Assessment Reports and other technical reports)
  • Represent the business stream in multidisciplined project teams
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the budget for projects including the planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the client and other relevant stakeholders

  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards
  • Carry out site surveys, inspections and supervision of junior colleagues on site

We want to hear from you if:

  • Developed experience and expertise within Highways/Civil engineering, probably gained in a Designer/Engineer role or equivalent
  • Comprehensive knowledge of design processes and procedures relevant to the civil engineering discipline
  • An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound Highways engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • Experience in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • You are happy to agree a programme of actions towards successful achievement of industry recognised qualifications, ie Incorporated or Chartered Engineer with a relevant body


In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have good commercial awareness and knowledge of budgets and programmes to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
