    Description

    The Head Filer is responsible for safety, quality, productivity, recovery, and for employee development within the sawmill filing department while maintaining and changing sawmill and planing mill saws, knives, and related equipment.

    The Head Filer also assists with troubleshooting manufacturing defects.


    Duties/Responsibilities*:
    Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
    Oversee the filing room by:
    managing the maintenance of filing room equipment, and
    ordering parts and maintaining inventory of saws and guide materials.
    Lead and train filing room personnel by:
    working side-by-side with team members when necessary;
    training and demonstrating all necessary working procedures for each equipment center, including safe operation; and
    providing team communication, encouragement, and motivation.
    Oversee the use and maintenance of:
    saw/knife grinding, leveling and tensioning equipment,
    band/round saw guides,
    the alignment of sawing/chipping equipment running surfaces,
    saw/knife cutting tolerances, and
    lubrication and bearings.
    Read and understand service and technical manuals.
    Stay up to date on new technology and make recommendations as needed.
    Clean and maintain work areas.
    Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
    On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.

    Position Requirements:
    Must meet position requirements to be considered a candidate for this position.
    Five (5) years of experience and fully proficient in:
    sharpening band saws, round saws, and knives;
    saw and knife grinding, leveling, tensioning both manually and with a machine;
    alignment of sawing/chipping equipment running surfaces; and
    stellite and carbide tooth technology.
    Ability to understand and operate:
    various welding equipment and processes
    the assembly and set-up of machinery, and
    forklift and other mobile equipment as applicable.
    Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
    Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.


    Environmental Conditions:
    May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and extreme temperatures.

    Required Personal Protective Equipment:
    Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times.

    Examples of PPE which may be required include high visibility garments, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
