Two days a week of this role is dedicated to working on the male acute admissions ward working as part of a busy MDT and delivering assessments, case formulations and therapies for clients with complex presentations.

The remaining days will be spent working across the four wards on assessments and individual and group therapies.


As part of our experienced Psychological Professions team, you will work alongside a Principal Psychologist, providing the psychology input for Oak ward, working with an Assistant Psychologist, Art Therapist and Addiction Counsellor to provide psychological interventions for the service users.

You will also work across all four wards, providing therapeutic interventions and assessments, providing the opportunity to develop your clinical skills in different contexts (on male and female wards, and medium and low secure wards).

There will be the opportunity to be part of the provision of existing therapeutic groups such as DBT-informed groups, offending behaviour groups and mindfulness-based groups.

There will be opportunities to be involved in training, service development, evaluation of the outcomes of our work and submitting this for publication.

There are opportunities to learn, deliver and/or support family interventions and restorative practice interventions.

The Hellingly Centre is a low and medium secure unit for people between the ages of 18-65 who have mental health problems and who have become involved with the criminal justice system.


It is anticipated that the successful applicant would be on the forensic psychologist training route (or other route if appropriate), and it is desirable that the successful applicant would already have some experience and progress on the route.


Job outline:


  • To complete a programme of professional training and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) within an agreed timescale (proposed to be four years)
  • The post holder will work independently, (but will refer issues of formulation and intervention to a registered Practitioner psychologist for the duration of training) and will be required to work within the policies of the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, the overall framework of the department's policies and procedures and the code of conduct and professional guidelines laid down by the HCPC / BPS.
Scope and Authority


The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive psychology service to culturally diverse patients across the relevant services.

The post holder will undertake research and audit activities, as part of the relevant psychological training, under the guidance of a responsible practitioner psychologist.

They may also provide supervision, teaching and training to other healthcare staff. All work conducted will be in line with the policies of the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust, the overall framework of the
- department's policies and procedures and the code of conduct and professional guidelines laid down by the HCPC and the BPS.

Key result areas

  • To carry out specialist psychological assessments, in order to reach a psychological formulation of the client's difficulties, under periodic supervision from a registered practitioner psychologist.
  • To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of client's mental health problems, and to practice within the context of evidencebased approaches.
  • To provide specialist assessments of clients presenting with cognitive impairment, and to be able to adjust psychological interventions to work effectively with people presenting with complex needs due to cognitive impairment and organic disorders.
  • To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients' formulations, diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • To undertake risk assessment, formulation and management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professionals on this.

Person Specification:


  • Must have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) in Psychology, have graduate membership of the BPS, and a BPS recognised master's degree in the relevant area of
