    Principal Functional Saftey Engineer, Permanent Full time

    Stone, Staffordshire - Hybrid.

    £60,000-£65,000 P/A

As they continue to expand and innovate, they are seeking a talented Functional Safety Engineer to join their team.

    Role Description: As a Principal Functional Safety Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and implementing safety-critical systems. You will apply your functional safety knowledge to support the safety lifecycle, advising projects on the design and integration of safety systems. You will also develop, manage, and maintain all aspects of the Functional Safety Management System, ensuring risks to plant and equipment operation are recognized, assessed, and mitigated. Collaboration with cross-functional teams to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective safety measures is key.

    Summary of Role:

    • Ensure functional safety processes are followed efficiently through effective planning, timely reviews, and assessments.
    • Provide departmental independence for executing Functional Safety Assessments.
    • Lead and provide direction for safety-related activities, offering suitable training for engineers.
    • Develop safety concepts, analyses, and requirements for complex systems.
    • Work closely with engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into project design, development, and testing phases.
    • Define and implement safety mechanisms, architectures, and strategies to achieve functional safety goals.
    • Collaborate with external stakeholders, including suppliers and regulatory authorities, to align on safety requirements and standards.
    • Support the development of safety documentation, including safety cases, hazard reports, and safety plans.
    • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in functional safety engineering.

    Essential Skills:

    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Higher level certification specific to functional safety (e.g., TÜV, FS Eng).
    • Proven significant experience in functional safety engineering, preferably in automation, nuclear, energy, or industrial sectors.
    • In-depth knowledge of safety standards and regulations (e.g., IEC 61508, 61511, ISO and their application in safety-critical systems.
    • Familiarity with safety analysis techniques such as FMEA, FTA, and DFA.
    • Ability to generate and apply SRS/SDRS documentation.
    • Proficiency in fault modeling techniques such as FMEA and FTA.
    • Experience with safety-related architectures and mechanisms, including fault tolerance and diagnostic coverage.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to systematically assess and mitigate safety risks.
    • Ability to participate in and potentially chair HAZOP, CHAZOP, and LOPA meetings and safety analysis.
    • Current full driving licence (UK or convertible to full UK).
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
    • Understanding of full project lifecycle.

    Desirable Skills:

    • Ability to work to deadlines and budgets.
    • Awareness of/understanding of DSEAR Regulations and Hazardous area applications.
    • Site installation and commissioning experience of control systems.
    • Knowledge of IEC62443, NIST & OG86 cyber standards.
