The role:


To appropriately conduct underwriting analysis on new and existing reinsurance business for a specialized area (such as Property Facultative, Casualty Facultative, Treaty, Assumed, Ceded etc.).


Evaluate complex risks and exposures, pricing structures, rates, terms and conditions, in accordance with corporate reinsurance guidelines and within given authority levels.

Use developing knowledge of global reinsurance markets to support management in setting the strategic direction of our reinsurance business. Develops relationships with a range of brokers and insureds to ensure profitability of a worldwide reinsurance portfolio. Key accountabilities:


Strategy and Planning

  • Contributes to functional strategy development and prioritises the operational deliverables and activities of team to support delivery of overall business targets.
  • Manages tactical plan and provides support to others to achieve positive results for the business in line with strategy

Policy, Process and Procedures

  • Evaluates insurance company's financial standing, operational strategy, and industry trends to determine whether to accept the risk, and if so, under what terms for renewal and new business.
  • Performs exposure and experience analysis on renewal business by combining knowledge and experience with available information on ceding insurance companies.
  • Assesses the customer/broker request and determines acceptable coverage that addresses the customer's critical insurance and service needs.
  • Assesses proposed structure, the ceding insurance company's operations and anticipated hazards, losses, expenses, financial strength, loss experience, and other underwriting considerations applies knowledge of probabilities of attachment and limit exhaustion, changes in exposure amounts, locations and concentrations, rating plans, loss trend and inuring reinsurance, develops acceptable participation and pricing thresholds that meet or exceed target returns, and has accountability and ownership of account underwriting recommendations.
  • Evaluates contract and language, and manage documentation work flow to ensure the contract outlines the risks, intended coverage, and other fields required specific to the contract within given authority limits.

Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus

  • Works with key stakeholders/business managers to develop sustainable underwriting products and services to attract and retain customers and increase profitability.
  • Establishes and strengthens strong relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues in the reinsurance market, to maximise influence, support their needs and achieve business objectives.

Skills & experience:


Knowledge And Experience

  • Thorough knowledge of relevant market conditions for specific class/portfolio.
  • Good knowledge of relevant Aspen underwriting systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Aspen's underwriting strategy and how this translates into operational targets and delivery.
  • Good knowledge of Reinsurance and Expected Profitability Analysis (EPA) requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements (specific reference to FCA / Lloyds regulation).
  • Strong understanding of the reinsurance strategy affecting portfolio.
  • Strong knowledge of Aspen underwriting process and procedures including EPA's.
  • In depth experience of working in an reinsurance underwriting environment within a specialised/complex area.
  • Specific professional qualifications at degree level or equivalent
  • Qualified within own professional discipline, with significant postqualification work experience within related environments and specialist function.
  • Associate of Chartered Insurance Institute (or equivalent)
  • Experience of successfully supporting technical and operational strategy.
  • Experience of managing reinsurance underwriting teams/resources.
  • Experienced in the use of risk profiling and pricing tools and loss models.
  • Strong established customer/broker relationships.
